Straight Park Campground Introduce
For those of us in Iowa seeking a straightforward, affordable, and conveniently located spot to park our RVs or enjoy a cabin getaway, Straight Park Campground in Fonda is a fantastic option. This city-run campground offers a no-frills yet well-equipped experience, perfect for travelers passing through or locals looking for a short-term escape. Situated near Lake Marvin and a ball field, it combines a touch of nature with community amenities, making it a practical choice for various camping needs.
Straight Park Campground provides a welcoming environment without the high costs often associated with larger, private parks. It's a place where you can enjoy the essentials – electric, water, and sewer hookups – at a very reasonable nightly rate. While it embraces its community park roots, it still offers the peace and quiet you desire for a relaxing stay. For Iowans, this campground represents a great value and a convenient base for exploring the charm of Fonda and the surrounding Pocahontas County area, or simply for an overnight stop on a longer journey across our beautiful state.
Straight Park Campground is conveniently located at 100 Straight Park Rd, Fonda, IA 50540, USA. This places it in the southwest corner of Pocahontas County, offering a good balance of small-town tranquility and accessibility. For Iowans, Fonda is situated within reasonable driving distance from larger regional centers, making it an easy destination for weekend trips or longer stays.
The campground's location within Straight Park means it's adjacent to local amenities like Lake Marvin (a pond with a lighted fountain), a ball field, and a nature trail, providing immediate recreational opportunities. While the park is generally easy to access, especially for RVs approaching from the main entrance, it's crucial for larger rigs to note that the exit road over railroad tracks and certain areas around the lake may have low-hanging trees or difficult turns. Utilizing the entrance for both entry and exit is often recommended for bigger vehicles to ensure smooth maneuvering. Despite these specific considerations for larger RVs, the overall accessibility to the campground and its proximity to the heart of Fonda for supplies and local events make it a convenient choice for visitors from across Iowa.
Straight Park Campground provides a range of essential services and amenities, focusing on convenience and affordability for its campers. While it maintains a city park feel, it's well-equipped for RVs and offers additional lodging options:
- Full Hookup RV Sites: Each site comes with shared water spigots (for neighboring sites), sewer connections, and 50-amp electrical service, ensuring comprehensive utility access for RVs. Some sites also offer 30/20/15 amp service.
- Affordable Nightly Rates: At approximately $15 per night (as per recent reports), it offers a highly economical camping solution. Monthly rates are also available at around $500 (as of May 2024), providing excellent value for longer stays.
- 14-Night Maximum Stay: This policy ensures availability for a rotating group of campers, making it accessible for both short and slightly longer visits.
- Three Camper Cabins for Rent: For those without an RV or who prefer a more solid structure, the park offers three rental cabins. These cabins are heated, air-conditioned, and include a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and refrigerator. They can sleep four (with a full-sized bunk bed) and have a picnic table and fire ring outside.
- Restrooms: Clean park restrooms are available. It's important to note that while there are restrooms, reviews indicate a lack of showers directly at the campground (though a showerhouse is mentioned on some official listings, it's best to confirm current availability).
- Dump Station: A sanitary dump station is available on-site for RV waste, though large rig access might be challenging for this specific amenity.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each camping site (both RV and cabin) is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, ideal for outdoor meals and campfires (subject to local fire bans).
- Self-Registration: RV/camper sites are typically on a first-come, first-served basis, with a self-registration system often located near the entrance.
- Reservations for Cabins: Cabin rentals can be reserved by calling Fonda City Hall.
Straight Park Campground offers several features and highlights that enhance the camping experience for locals in Iowa, making it more than just a place to park your rig:
- Lake Marvin (Pond) with Lighted Fountain: The park is home to Lake Marvin, a beautiful pond that often features a lighted fountain. This provides a scenic backdrop for campsites and offers opportunities for fishing.
- Wildlife Habitat and Nature Trail: Surrounding the lake and within the park are areas designated as wildlife habitat, complemented by a nature trail perfect for leisurely strolls and appreciating the local flora and fauna.
- Playground: A kid-friendly playground is available on-site, making it a good option for families traveling with children.
- Proximity to Ball Field: Being near a local ball field adds a community feel and might appeal to those attending local sports events.
- Community Events Access: The campground's location makes it convenient for attending local events in Fonda, such as rodeos and demo derbies, which have received positive reviews for their organization and entertainment value.
- Affordable and Accessible: The low nightly rate of $15 and the availability of full hookups make it a highly attractive option for budget-conscious campers looking for good value.
- Quiet Hours: While a train does pass daily around 6:05 AM (with a horn blow), reviews indicate it's generally quiet during other hours, allowing for peaceful rest.
- Open Air Shelter and Handicap-Accessible Dock: These additional park amenities offer spaces for gatherings and ease of access to the pond for fishing or enjoying the water.
- Disc Golf Course: Straight Park also features a disc golf course, providing another recreational activity for campers and visitors.

Customer Reviews
Shared water spigot for neighboring site, sewer and 50amp for $15 a night, maximum 14 nights. Near Marvin lake/pond and ball field. Exit is around the lake with low hanging trees, we will turn around our 13' 9" tall, 41' long fifth wheel and go out entrance. Do NOT take exit road over railroad tracks. Train blows horn at 6:05am everyday, no other trains during quiet hours. Park restroom only, no showers. Dump station available, but difficult for big rig access.
Rodeo was fantastic as was the demo derby. The grounds were clean and parking was good.
Great little campground with 3 cabins to rent.
