Summit Lake Campground Introduce

Summit Lake Campground is a pristine and secluded camping destination nestled in the high alpine country of Crescent, Oregon. This charming campground offers a unique experience for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate nature in its raw and untouched form. Located at the edge of Summit Lake, the campground provides access to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region, with crystal-clear waters and snow-capped mountain peaks as a backdrop. While it caters primarily to those seeking an adventurous camping experience, Summit Lake Campground is a hidden gem for anyone looking to disconnect from civilization and immerse themselves in nature.

Summit Lake Campground is ideal for tent campers and those traveling with small recreational vehicles (RVs). The campground offers basic but essential amenities, including vault toilets and a nearby water source. However, it's important to note that this is not your typical camping destination—it’s a rugged and undeveloped site that requires preparation and resilience. The road leading to the campground is a challenging dirt track that demands a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle due to its steepness, rough terrain, and lack of maintenance.

What sets Summit Lake Campground apart is its natural beauty and sense of isolation. The lake itself is a highlight, with turquoise waters that reflect the surrounding alpine meadows and mountain ranges. Visitors can enjoy swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding on the lake, though motorized boats are discouraged to preserve the pristine environment. The area is also known for its fishing opportunities, although the lake is not stocked, so anglers should be prepared for a more rustic experience.

One of the standout features of Summit Lake Campground is its limited capacity, with only three camping sites. This ensures a quieter and more secluded experience, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy nature in peace. The campground provides picnic tables and fire pits (though open fires are restricted), allowing visitors to fully embrace the outdoor lifestyle. Despite the lack of trash cans, the site encourages visitors to pack out what they pack in, promoting Leave No Trace principles.

For those willing to brave the challenges of accessing Summit Lake Campground, the rewards are immense. The rugged terrain and mosquito-filled surroundings may deter some, but for others, these elements add to the charm of an untouched wilderness experience. Many visitors return year after year for the solitude, clean air, and unparalleled beauty of the area. It’s a destination that truly caters to those who appreciate nature in its purest form.

  • Primitive camping with limited amenities
  • Rugged terrain requiring a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle
  • Pristine alpine lake for swimming, kayaking, and fishing
  • Stunning mountain views and peaceful surroundings
  • No trash cans available; pack out waste
  • Limited camping sites for a more secluded experience

Customer feedback highlights both the challenges and rewards of visiting Summit Lake Campground. Many guests praise the campground’s natural beauty and sense of isolation, describing it as a haven for nature lovers. However, they caution that this is not for those seeking luxury or ease—only adventurers prepared for rough conditions should consider staying here. The reviews consistently emphasize the importance of bringing bug spray due to the area’s mosquito problem and being mindful of the fragile ecosystem.

Summit Lake Campground is a true gem for anyone looking to experience Oregon’s wilderness at its finest. While it may not be ideal for everyone, those who make the journey will find themselves rewarded with an unforgettable outdoor adventure in one of the most beautiful corners of the state.

The lake is gorgeous , but this is not a place for "soft" camping. The road in requires a high clearance, 4x4 vehicle because it is a seriously steep, rough, potholed, rutted, rocky, unmaintained dirt track. The mosquitos may be the worst in the state (not an exageration). The campground is extremely limited: only 3 sites with picnic tables, a vault toilet and an unpaved boat "launch" appropriate only for kayaks and SUPs. No fires, and no trash cans available. The water here is as pristine as any alpine lake can get and there are very few fish (not stocked), and the people who make the journey up and brave the mosquitos go for the solitude and quiet and beauty. So PLEASE leave the motorized watercraft at home. Those turquoise crystal clear waters won't stay that way for long if gas engines start finding their way onto the lake.

Beauty abounds up in this high county lake. Can be a very rough ride, the blood suckers are always out in force but the water is cold and the air is clear. The camp ground can get crowded quick as it is a very small one, with pit toilets.
