Beautiful campground. Clean and quiet with nice views of the canyon walls. At least 2 of the campsites will fit a camper more then 27 feet long. Our truck and camper together are 50 feet and we were able to park in one of the sites, even without unhooking the truck from the camper. This is a great place to camp in the winter when it isn't so hot. The drive over the mountain to the National Monument is easily done in a small SUV with reasonable ground clearance.

Two stars off for low clearance canopy. Be forewarned we hit the canopy with our truck camper height around 12’9”. You may be able to drive down the middle and do ok which is what we did on way out. Download your offline maps ahead of time. There is public WiFi at visitor center and in Portal. Otherwise a fantastic 5 star cg with beautiful scenery, lots of trails and nature, dark skies, great volunteers. Some sites are sunnier than others and some are almost always in the shade. Sites generally level. Some sites have a shelter and others not. All have fire pits and tent pads I think. Some have room for two vehicles others not. Didn’t find a detailed map or description of the various sites, but I may have overlooked it. That would have been helpful. Some sites had more canopy than others and therefore less clearance and more shade. I thought the space between sites was excellent and pretty good privacy in several at least. Not a great place for tall vehicles and I didn’t see any details to that effect on the website or reviews. Cash or check taken. Paul was our camp host and very pleasant, informative and kept the vault toilet clean which is much appreciated. This time of year we didn’t see that many birds. Visitor center is worth a stop. Good history and wildlife details there and nice helpful volunteers. Thanks Kevin for the chat and info.

Update 2025: water has been out since january. And due to staffing cuts it may take a long time to be repaired. Fires are strongly discouraged as it is extrem fire danger due to lack of monsoon summer and winter. Please bring water with you. Lovely place. Can be very busy during birding season. Lots of wildlife if campers are quiet. Rules adhered to like dogs on leash. Put out your fire before bed. This is a first come first serve so no reservations fee area no slipping pay tickets behind the current campers ticket. toilets are clean. Lots of trails and biking. No atvs in camp and nothing over 28 feet long and nothing taller than 11 feet as the trees are low. No fifth wheels. 2 cars 8 people a site is enforced. Fantastic sunrises. Owls everywhere. 20 a night unless you have a senior pass then it is 10. 8 for day use in campsite dawn to dusk. trail parking is Free with approved passes. Love your forest and forest service workers.

All three campgrounds in the Cave Creek Canyon Recreation Area: Sunny Flats, Stewart, and Idlewilde currently do not have water because a water leak. Campers should come prepared with water. Campers can fill water jugs at the Cave Creek Canyon Visitor Center. March 24, 2025.
