Sunrise Campground / Pilot Butte Reservoir Introduce
Sunrise Campground, nestled by the shores of Pilot Butte Reservoir in Fremont County, Wyoming, offers a quintessential outdoor experience for those seeking a blend of tranquility and recreation within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category. Managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, this destination provides a more rustic and self-sufficient camping environment, making it ideal for adventurers who appreciate natural beauty and a wide array of activities without the extensive commercialization found in some private parks.
- Campsites: The campground typically offers developed campsites and RV sites. These are generally basic, un-serviced sites, meaning they usually do not include electrical, water, or sewer hookups. Campers should arrive prepared for self-contained camping, bringing their own water supply and managing their waste. Sites often come with picnic/camping shelters or picnic tables and possibly fire rings.
- Restrooms: Restrooms are available on-site, which are typically vault toilets or basic public facilities, not flush toilets or showers. These are generally situated near the picnic and camping shelters for convenience.
- Boat Ramp: A key amenity for water enthusiasts, a boat ramp provides access to the reservoir for launching various watercraft. This is a critical service given the popularity of boating on Pilot Butte Reservoir.
- No Drinking Water: It is explicitly stated in multiple sources that drinking water is not available at Sunrise Campground or Pilot Butte Reservoir. Visitors must bring their own potable water for all needs, including drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
- Dump Station: While not explicitly stated as being at Sunrise Campground itself, dump stations are often available at Bureau of Reclamation sites or nearby towns for RV waste disposal. Visitors should confirm this before arrival.
- Picnic Shelters: The presence of picnic and camping shelters indicates designated areas for day use and informal gathering, enhancing the visitor experience beyond just individual campsites.
- Exceptional Fishing: Pilot Butte Reservoir is highly regarded for its year-round fishing opportunities, provided visitors hold a valid Wyoming State fishing license. Popular fish species include various types of trout (rainbow, brown, cutthroat), ling (burbot), and crappie. This makes it a significant draw for anglers.
- Diverse Water Sports: The reservoir's 1,000 surface acres make it ideal for a wide array of water activities. These include boating, water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, wakesurfing, kneeboarding, and air chair. The boat ramp facilitates easy access for these activities.
- Hiking: The surrounding landscape offers opportunities for hiking, allowing visitors to explore the hills and valleys around the reservoir and enjoy the scenic beauty.
- Wildlife Viewing: The area is home to various wild animals, offering chances for watchable wildlife experiences. This is a feature often highlighted for those interested in nature observation and photography.
- Hunting: During appropriate seasons and with the necessary Wyoming State licenses, big game and waterfowl hunting are permitted in the surrounding areas.
- Winter Sports: While details are sparse, winter sports are listed as available activities, suggesting ice fishing or other cold-weather recreation depending on conditions.
- Secluded and Peaceful: Given its more rustic nature and potentially limited shoreline access via roads, the area tends to offer a quiet and less crowded experience compared to highly developed recreational sites. This appeals to those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with nature.

Online reviews, though limited, tend to describe the campground as small, quiet, and primarily used by locals. They often mention the presence of a vault toilet, covered picnic areas, and fire rings. While some note the proximity to a highway and potential noise, the overall sentiment points to it being a functional and accessible spot for spending a night or enjoying the reservoir. The site is noted to be managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Interior, with a maximum stay of 10 days. For visitors seeking a genuine Wyoming outdoor experience focused on fishing, boating, and a peaceful escape into the high desert landscape, Sunrise Campground at Pilot Butte Reservoir offers a straightforward and rewarding option within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category.

Free. Stopped here to take a break from work for lunch. Didn't even know public lake access existed so near to Pavilion. Boat launch, restrooms, picnic areas with canopies lakeside, and the road was well maintained. Definitely returning
This is the best place to camp, in our opinion, of the three developed campgrounds around Pilot Butte Reservoir. It is away from the highway. It is well laid out and maintained. There are about four developed sites which have sun/wind shelters with a table, charcoal grill and a fire ring. There is good vault toilet here. No drinking water. Access to the lake is to the north at the boat ramp. There are some trees which provide some shade here. During the summer there may be some competition for the developed sites. Although when we visited there was nobody camped here. We visited September 2023.
Should be a 5 except for clowns breaking beer bottles every where. I'm guessing its just a few and the rest of us clean it up. Loved the view, level site on the water , with a fire pit, picnic table and shelter. Very quiet the night we were there however im guessing the beer bottle gang would end the quiet on weekends.
