Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For Californians seeking an authentic, peaceful retreat into the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains, away from the bustling crowds of more popular destinations, Swanson Campground near Shaver Lake offers a truly remarkable and often overlooked opportunity. This isn't a massive, amenity-rich resort; instead, it’s a tranquil "hidden gem" that provides a genuine back-to-nature experience. If your idea of a perfect camping trip involves dense conifer forests, sprawling meadows, ample privacy, and the freedom for your canine companions to roam (within responsible limits), then Swanson Campground is a destination you'll be thrilled to discover.
Swanson Campground stands out precisely because of what it lacks: the crowds. Unlike many reservable campgrounds that become "packed" during peak seasons, Swanson, with its limited number of campsites (around eight), maintains a serene and uncrowded atmosphere. This intimate setting allows for a deeper connection with the natural environment, where the sounds of distant motorized vehicles are rare and the primary soundtrack is the gentle rustle of pine trees. It’s a place where campsites are often "far away from each other," ensuring a sense of seclusion and personal space that is increasingly difficult to find in California's popular outdoor areas.
The beauty of Swanson Campground lies in its simplicity and its unspoiled surroundings. Visitors rave about the "great trails through meadows" that can be accessed directly from the campground, inviting exploration and gentle adventures. Imagine starting your day with a walk among wildflowers, or simply relaxing at your spacious site, shaded by towering trees. Even during busy holiday weekends like Labor Day, the campground manages to retain its quiet charm, making it a preferred choice over more "jammed packed" alternatives like Edison or Dora Belle campgrounds, as noted by appreciative campers.
While the amenities are rustic – pit toilets are present, though some reviews mention they can be "stinky" – the overall experience more than compensates for this. The focus here is on the natural beauty and the opportunity to truly disconnect. The fact that the campground is un-manned, relying on a ranger for fee collection, further enhances its low-key, self-sufficient vibe. This minimal oversight, however, doesn't detract from the security or maintenance, as evidenced by positive comments about the beauty and cleanliness of the camp area itself. It's a small price to pay for such beauty and seclusion.
For California locals, Swanson Campground represents an invaluable escape. It offers a chance to experience the raw beauty of the Sierra National Forest without the overwhelming crowds often associated with peak season. It’s a perfect spot for those seeking a quiet, dog-friendly retreat where the primary activities revolve around enjoying nature, hiking serene trails, and truly unwinding. If you're looking for a peaceful sanctuary where the stars shine bright and the air is fresh, Swanson Campground is a hidden gem waiting to be explored in your own backyard.

Public restroom
We stayed at Swanson Meadows because everywhere else was booked. I'm so glad we chose this campground. The reservable campgrounds were packed! Swanson is a hidden gem. There's only like 8-ish campsites so there's never a ton of people. There's great trails through meadows from the campgrounds. The pit toilets were pretty stinky, but other than that, we loved this site. Very dense conifer cover. We let our dogs run around off leash. We went Labor Day Weekend. Of course we tried to NOT PAY since it's a non-manned campground. Ranger came around and collected money. No complaints though. Small price to pay for such beauty and seclusion. Campsites are far away from each other (most are at least). So glad we stayed here rather than JAMMED PACKED Edison or Dora Belle.
