Among these, Skiatook Lake, located in northeast Oklahoma, is a jewel, and its Tall Chief Cove Campground is a well-known destination for those looking to immerse themselves in waterside recreation. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), Tall Chief Cove provides a blend of essential amenities and stunning natural beauty, making it a popular choice for campers from across the Sooner State.
Tall Chief Cove Campground is situated on the eastern side of beautiful Skiatook Lake, near Sperry, OK. The address provided, Unnamed Rd, Sperry, OK 74073, USA, points to its location within this scenic area. More precisely, it's about 30 minutes northwest of Tulsa, making it a highly accessible escape for residents of Oklahoma's second-largest city and surrounding communities.
Access to the campground is typically via State Highway 20, turning onto Lake Road and proceeding a few miles to the facility. This well-maintained road ensures a smooth journey for all types of vehicles, including large RVs. Despite its proximity to a major metropolitan area, Tall Chief Cove manages to maintain a natural, wooded atmosphere along the lakeshore, offering a true sense of being "away from it all." Skiatook Lake itself is a significant draw, known for its clear blue waters and excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. The surrounding rolling hills of blackjack and post oak trees interspersed with tallgrass prairie create a diverse and appealing landscape for outdoor activities. For Oklahomans, this means a convenient and visually appealing destination for all their favorite lake-based recreational pursuits.

Showed up at sunset without a reservation and snagged a great spot right on the water. Site #17 was listed as electric only with no water, but it had a water spigot right next to the site. No sewer, although there is a dump station on your way out of the campground on the main road. I don't know if we just missed the dumpsters, but we couldn't find any dumpsters and there were no trash cans near the dump station. The views over the lake are pretty awesome. We slept through a crazy lightning storm that reflected off the water. Be careful of scorpions. We were chilling at the picnic table late at night and a scorpion crawled right next to our feet. Cell service (both AT&T and Verizon) was not fast, but it was adequate for getting some work done. Paid $24 for an overnight stay.
Would not recommend. There is a very rowdy and loud group that played music and hollered until 3:00AM. They drove a vehicle through our campsite to unload wood next to their fire. When we asked politely the next day if they could keep it down the next night so we could get our 4 year old grandson to sleep at a reasonable time, they basically let it be known they had no intention to do so. We complained to the camp host, but they just told us to call OHP or Osage County, because those campers are regulars and no matter how many time they ask them to keep it down, they never do. Sad that we live in a world where people just completely disregard those around them and do what they want. I bet their parents are so proud of the way they turned out.
This is a great campground. Plan on reserving ahead for Friday thru Sunday. If it's open Sunday thru Thursday it's often listed as walkup. Other than those days there aren't any first come sites. Plenty of nearby water spickets. This lake has very clear water in most places. Beautiful. Some sites are pretty short. Some are large. Do some research if you have a large camper. Swim beach is closed, maybe until warmer weather. Clean and handicap accessible bathrooms and showers.
We came up for one night and really enjoyed our visit. Really nice area, nice restrooms. There's a good store called Betty's Country Store close by where we got breakfast. We will be coming up again!
I stayed four days and it was very peaceful! The camper was snuggled into a tree covered very shady space.THe bath house was kept very clean and stocked with paper, soap at all times. I would definitely recommend this camp sight as family-friendly!
