The trail starts easily with a paved walkway for about .2 miles. Then it changes into gravel which is crunchy but easy to walk on. There are a few stretches of very rocky trail. There is an outcropping of large boulders where people were enjoying the view. You will need agile footwork in some places. The falls were more like a cascading stream with many small pools. We saw tadpoles in one of the pools. It is peaceful to sit by the falls and listen to the babbling water. It seemed longer than 1.2 miles one way but the trail is mostly shaded by the canopy. My fitness tracker said 3.4 total.
I thought this was a great campground, lots of pretty private spaces. We were there November 2023, and there was only one other site occupied. We were in campsite number one, and it had a large platform for the tent, as did number two. I think they are both considered handicapped sites. Picnic table, fire pit, and just a short walk to the restroom. Normally, there is water available, but they turn it off in November through March or April, so make sure you bring your own if you’re winter camping. You can easily walk to the overlook and Mina Sauk trailhead from the campsite
The picnic area is surprisingly level considering your on the highest mountain in Missouri. Has adequate but primitive facilities available. Handicapped access restrooms and picnic area, and peaceful with an air of tranquility.
Surprisingly busy but very nice. The woods are gorgeous and my campsite was on top of dry moss so it made for a very comfortable night. (2 bars of 5g service)
It's our favorite place to tent camp. There are 12 primitive sites, each with a picnic table and a fire pit. There are vaulted toilets and potable water at the entrance. No reservations, so come early to claim your spot. $15 a night on the honor system.
