Temperance River Campground Introduce

🌲 **Introduction / Overview**

For Minnesota residents, the North Shore of Lake Superior holds a special place, representing the very best of our state's rugged, unspoiled natural beauty. Tucked away in this beloved region is the **Temperance River Campground**, a serene and highly sought-after destination for campers who prefer a more traditional, nature-focused experience. Unlike the nearby, more developed State Park facilities, this particular campground is managed under the umbrella of the **Superior National Forest**, offering a smaller, more intimate setting that appeals to those looking to truly unplug and connect with the wild.

The campground is known for its quiet, shaded campsites nestled alongside the Temperance River, a river famous for having no sand bar at its mouth—hence the name. It serves as an ideal basecamp for anglers, hikers, and anyone looking for a peaceful retreat before or after venturing into the vast wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The atmosphere here is one of peaceful solitude, with past visitors frequently highlighting the clean facilities and general tranquility of the site. It offers a genuine slice of the North Woods experience, making it a beloved choice among local campers in Minnesota.

📍 **Location and Accessibility**

The Temperance River Campground is perfectly situated for North Shore exploration, a vital stopping point on many local itineraries. While the mailing address is Tofte, the campground itself requires a short but scenic drive inland from the main thoroughfare of Highway 61.

The specific location is along the **Sawbill Trail (County Road 2)**, a well-known route that leads deeper into the Superior National Forest and toward the Boundary Waters. To reach it from Tofte, a camper simply needs to turn north onto the Sawbill Trail from Highway 61 and follow the road for approximately 12 miles. The campground entrance is clearly marked on the left.

Its accessibility makes it a convenient option for Minnesotans heading to or returning from the BWCAW, or for those simply seeking a scenic, forested camping experience away from the direct Lake Superior shoreline. As it is a Superior National Forest Campground, it operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning early arrival is often recommended, especially during peak summer weekends, to secure one of its limited, peaceful sites.

The campground was very quiet with a clean outhouse and access to potable water. It was only $18 a night. There are bear warnings around so keep your food in a car, truck or secure hard walled camper and it says to cover your coolers in your vehicle because the bears know what they look like and will try to get to it if the bears see them...There was a little chipmunk that visited every morning, afternoon and evening during my four days I was there and was very cute.

We stopped here for a night on the way to the BWCAW. Quiet, clean campsites, on the river.

Small with only 8 or 9 sites. $18 per night. Rustic with one outhouse. Sites are not super close together, but you will hear your neighbor every time they open a car door or laugh. One of our two night here people were up partying well into the night. Close to the gravel road which can be pretty busy, so road noise. If you want privacy are real.peace and quiet this spot may disappoint you. Close and convenient to many trails and the river is right there.

This place stinks, don't go here! Ok I'm being selfish...I don't want you to all flock there. Just spent two great nights here. Website said campground was in winter non-fee status and would be unplowed. Pleasantly the main drag was plowed, but the banks were pretty high. Also found the vault toilet door unlocked and useable. Lots of snow! Dug out our fire pit, setup camp. Fell asleep to the Temperance running next to us. We could hear a couple of vehicles pass the campground that were on the Sawbill but not bad at all. One nice thing is that this campground is right at the end of the blacktop on the Sawbill. Roads were clear all the way up to it. We had set out to stay at Baker Lake but drove and drove and could never find signage so we turned back. This was a great option for winter camping!!

Off the beaten path, this was the perfect "roughing it" campground. Just steps from the Temperance River, the sound of the flowing water made for an easy sleep. Fresh water spigot and pit toilet were the only amenities. My dog and I had a great time.
