Terlingua Abajo 1 Introduce

Terlingua Abajo 1, located in Terlingua, TX 79852, offers a unique backcountry camping experience with breathtaking views of the Santa Elena Canyon. As part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, this site provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the Texas desert.

The campground is praised for its spectacular views of the Santa Elena Canyon, making it a highly desirable location for nature enthusiasts. While it offers a sense of seclusion, it's worth noting that there are "neighbors" at nearby sites, though they are not in close proximity. The location provides opportunities for hiking, including exploring the creek area and discovering ruins.

One of the key features highlighted by visitors is the stunning sunrise and the exceptional stargazing due to the dark night skies. However, it's important to note that this is a backcountry site with limited amenities. There are no restrooms, power, or wood fires allowed. Campers should be prepared for a primitive camping experience.

The road leading to the site is generally manageable, but rangers have noted that it can become challenging during rainy conditions. The campsite accommodates a maximum of two vehicles, and parking can be tight. The campsites themselves are spacious, providing ample room for camping setups.

Wildlife activity, including coyotes and javelinas, is common in the area. Campers are advised to use the provided bear box for food and trash storage to ensure safety and minimize wildlife encounters. The site is ideal for groups if all three sites in the area are reserved, creating a special and secluded camping experience.

For those seeking a backcountry camping adventure with stunning canyon views and exceptional stargazing, Terlingua Abajo 1 offers a unique and memorable experience. Campers should come prepared for a primitive camping environment and be mindful of wildlife activity.

Great views of the Santa Elena Canyon from here! You're closer to "neighbors" than other back country sites we stayed at but definitely not super close. Hiked the creek area and discovered ruins.

I'd give this a 5 if there were no neighbors! Choose the site closest to the canyon so you wake up to the best view. The road into the site isn't too bad, though several Rangers noted it can be bad when it rains, so be prepared. This site fits two vehicles only. Looks like the other two sites do as well...it's fairly tight to park, but the campsites themselves are large. Coyote and javalina activity, so use the bear box for your food/trash. The sunrise view is spectacular, and of course the night sky is dark, so the stargazing is amazing. No restroom, no power, no wood fires. If you've got a group and can get all 3 sites, this is a special location for sure.

Great campsite. I probably shouldn't have driven my Chevy Malibu all the way to the campsite, but I was able to make it - only having to drive rather carefully. The ruins here are beautiful and the campsite rather peaceful.

This campsite has a great view towards the mouth of the Santa Elena Canyon. Here there are also 3 campsites in close proximity with plenty of parking, it would be a good location for large groups
