The Backyard RV Resort Introduce
For Alabamians seeking a convenient and comfortable spot to set up their RV or camper, look no further than The Backyard RV Resort in Montgomery. While its name might evoke images of sprawling luxury, this campground is celebrated by many local users for its practicality, accessibility, and the essential amenities it provides for both short and longer stays. It's a pragmatic choice for those passing through Montgomery or looking for a central base to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Alabama’s capital city.
The Backyard RV Resort, soon to be known as Unhitched Montgomery, offers a straightforward and often hassle-free camping experience. Reviews from fellow Alabamians highlight its ease of check-in, particularly for overnight stops. While it might not boast extensive recreational facilities like some larger resorts, it delivers on the core needs of RV travelers: level, gravel sites with full hookups. This focus on fundamental convenience makes it a reliable option for many who prioritize a smooth setup and a peaceful night's rest over elaborate amenities.
What truly makes The Backyard RV Resort suitable for local users is its blend of convenience and essential comforts. It serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring Montgomery's historical landmarks, or simply as a comfortable overnight stop on a longer journey through the state. Despite some background noise from nearby highways and the airport, many find the overall atmosphere to be surprisingly quiet and peaceful, especially within the confines of the park. It’s a practical solution for those who want to experience the outdoors without straying too far from urban conveniences.
The Backyard RV Resort is strategically located at 4350 Sassafras Cir, Montgomery, AL 36105, USA. This address places it very close to major interstate I-65 (exit 168), making it incredibly convenient for travelers coming from all directions within Alabama and beyond. This ease of access is a recurring theme in camper reviews, particularly for those with larger rigs who appreciate the simple pull-through sites.
While the immediate surroundings are described as somewhat industrial or commercial by some, the campground itself is reportedly tucked away, often behind a fence and some woods, which helps to create a sense of separation from the busy outside world. Campers have noted that while there might be some highway noise and occasional sounds from the nearby airport or train tracks, it generally doesn't overwhelmingly detract from the peacefulness of the park. Navigating to the resort is straightforward, though some advise being aware that leaving the park might involve a right turn followed by a U-turn opportunity on a busy highway if you intend to go left. Overall, its prime location near major routes makes it an excellent choice for a quick stop or as a base for exploring Montgomery and the wider central Alabama region.

Customer Reviews
This place isn't really a "resort" in the typical sense. It's convenient to the interstate and check-in was a breeze. The sites are just a drive thru with no frills. It was fine for us because we were just stopping overnight. But there weren't any tables, fire pits, etc. I believe there was a communal area, but we didn't receive any papers at check in to tell us what was available. There were a lot of geese and their babies which was super cute. I'm giving it 4 stars because it served our needs, but if we had a bunch of kids, etc it wouldn't have been a good choice for us. Oh, and the area it was located at was a bit sketchy. Just be aware of your surroundings. The campground was packed so we felt safe.
It's near an airport, so not super quiet. The sites are very close to one another and the showers were broken and not recently cleaned. Service was prompt and kind however and it is a convenient place to stay when passing through. There are a few neat amenities like a giant chess board and connect four with a nice sitting area, however the area is very swampy and the mosquitos are out in force so bring bug spray!
Traveling across country and found this gem! We accessed the park via westbound Hwy 80 and although traffic was heavy, there were plenty of stoplights to safely cross the eastbound lanes into the park. Arriving late afternoon on a Wednesday we found the new managers, Trish and Blake eager to help direct us to our pull-through site (#402 - crushed rock, level and 120' to accommodate our big rig plus long trailer). The utility connections were perfectly placed for easy access providing strong 50 amp service and although we did not use it, they offered complimentary wi-fi and cable TV connections. The amenities included a large bathhouse with ADA-accessible showers & toilets, fee-based washers & dryers, community "Grill Hub", concrete fire pit area with comfy Adirondack chairs, a large covered "Hangout" with (tall tables and even a TV) plus a catch & release lake! The other patrons appeared to be a mix of overnight travelers, families and extended stay RVers. After a peaceful nights rest, we awoke to birds chirping and the gentle hum of a distant train. Exiting the park to access Hwy 80 west appeared to be a challenge, however Trish & Blake directed us to take a right turn out of the park, a quick left turn into a large Circle K parking lot with large driveway access to westbound Hwy 80. Easy!! Looking forward to our next opportunity to enjoy all that this RV park has to offer!
Not bad. Not in a great location, but we didn't have any problems either. A bunch of the fence has fallen down which gives a feeling of junky and lack of security. Inside the campground there is a cool hangout area with plenty of yard games for the family. We had fun. The manager was a bit abrupt when he saw us driving around. He didn't realize we were registered and was not welcoming. The lady in the office was a gem though. The bathrooms have different codes for men's and women's, good thinking. But they have us both codes, which we needed, so I'm not sure it really matters...?
Backyard has been a stopping place for the last 8 years. It is so convenient for us on our way to Gulf Shores and later Florida. It’s easy to exit 65 South or North and only minutes from the Interstate. Clean restrooms, laundry, plenty of water pressure, 30/50 amp service, WiFi, and cable tv. It’s moderately priced and well worth it. I give it a 10 out of 10.
