The Boulders Introduce

Hello, fellow Arizonans! If you're looking for an outdoor experience that truly captures the unique beauty and rugged spirit of our desert landscape, then "The Boulders" along the Florence-Kelvin Highway near Florence is a spot you absolutely need to explore. This isn't your typical organized campground with paved sites and full hookups. Instead, The Boulders offers a more raw, authentic, and wonderfully picturesque desert adventure, characterized by its "unbelievable and mesmerizing views of these huge boulders" that dominate the landscape. It's the kind of place that beckons photographers, off-road enthusiasts, and anyone who simply wants to immerse themselves in the stunning Sonoran Desert.

For us locals, finding diverse and engaging outdoor spaces is key to enjoying Arizona's vast wilderness. The Boulders provides an exceptional backdrop for a variety of activities, from thrilling off-road excursions to peaceful hikes among its iconic rock formations. Whether you're planning a day trip to explore or a rustic overnight stay under our famously clear Arizona skies, this area offers a unique connection to nature. It's a "kid and dog friendly" spot, perfect for families looking for an accessible outdoor escape, provided you keep a close watch on your loved ones amidst the natural terrain. While it encourages self-sufficiency, the unforgettable scenery makes The Boulders a must-visit for anyone seeking a true taste of Arizona's untamed beauty.

Location and Accessibility

The Boulders is situated along the Florence-Kelvin Highway, near Florence, AZ 85132, USA. This location places it within the vast and striking Sonoran Desert of Pinal County, southeast of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Florence-Kelvin Highway itself is a well-known route for scenic drives and access to various outdoor recreational areas, including those on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land.

Access to The Boulders is generally via a dirt road, which, according to local knowledge, is located "left of the gate that's private property." This distinction is crucial for visitors to note: while there may be private land in the vicinity, the area known as "The Boulders" is typically accessible for public use. The dirt road implies that vehicles with higher clearance or 4x4 capabilities might be preferred, especially after heavy rains, making it "great for off-road fun." However, reviewers also indicate that you "can park and hike or explore the boulders too," suggesting that it's also accessible for those who prefer to explore on foot. As a more rustic, potentially dispersed camping area, it's easily reachable by locals familiar with navigating Arizona's extensive network of unpaved roads and public lands. Being a short drive from Florence, the closest services are readily available, allowing campers to quickly stock up on necessities before heading into this captivating desert landscape.

Services Offered

It is important to clarify that "The Boulders" described in the reviews appears to be a natural recreation area, likely on public land (such as BLM land), rather than a formally managed campground with dedicated services. As such, visitors should expect a rustic, self-sufficient experience.

  • Open space for dispersed camping (often referred to as boondocking or dry camping), where campers find their own spot rather than designated sites.

  • No formal restrooms or running water; campers must bring their own water and practice Leave No Trace principles, including packing out all waste.

  • No electrical hookups or dump stations on site.

  • Fire opportunities are limited to personal fire pits, and campers must adhere to current fire restrictions, which are common in Arizona's dry climate.

  • No on-site staff or visitor center; self-reliance is key.

  • The area provides natural features for photography, hiking, and off-roading.

  • Pet-friendly (dogs allowed), but owners are responsible for waste removal and control.

  • Kid-friendly, with parents responsible for supervision in the rugged terrain.

It's crucial to understand that while there is a "The Boulders at Skyrise" listed on Hipcamp offering glamping tents with furnished amenities, the customer reviews provided describe a more raw, natural "boulders" area on the Florence-Kelvin Highway, indicating a dispersed camping or day-use spot. Our content focuses on the latter, aligning with the spirit of the provided reviews which highlight a less structured environment.

Beautiful on a Winter, early Spring day. Lots of photography opportunities. There is a locked gate, that is private property. There is a dirt road left of the gate that's where you enter. Great for off road fun, but can park and hike or explore the boulders too. Kid and dog friendly if watched closely. Bring what you need closest services are in Florence. The only dislike for this is that it seems to be a party spot, lots of cans and broken glass left behind.

Watch out for the spiky plants, and definitely bring good climbing gloves, but it's a tin of fun and has some really cool stuff!

This is simply a lot to off-load off-road vehicles, a "staging area" for desert recreation. NO SERVICES OF ANY KIND.
