Introduction / Overview: Your Basecamp in the Big Snowies
For Montana residents and visitors alike, seeking an escape into the wild, majestic landscapes of the Big Sky State is a perennial pursuit. The Crystal Lake Group Campground, located high in the Big Snowy Mountains south of Lewistown, offers a truly unique and memorable setting for your next outdoor group adventure. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,700 feet, this US Forest Service campground is part of the extensive Crystal Lake recreation area within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. It provides an ideal base for groups looking to immerse themselves in the region's abundant recreational opportunities, from serene lake activities to challenging high-mountain hiking trails.
The name "Crystal Lake" itself evokes images of pristine waters and clear mountain air, which is exactly what you'll find here. The campground caters specifically to larger parties, offering dedicated facilities designed to accommodate groups, family reunions, or large organized outings. While the natural surroundings are undeniably beautiful—with the dramatic backdrop of Mt. Harlow and the 45-acre Crystal Lake—it is important for prospective campers to be aware of the recent changes to the campground’s immediate aesthetic. Due to necessary forest management and the removal of hazardous trees by the Forest Service, parts of the campground now feature more expansive views and less natural shading than in years past. This has resulted in a more open, sun-exposed environment, with some ground-level scrub and stumps remaining. However, this management is a commitment to visitor safety and long-term forest health, and the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding lake and mountain trails remains untouched. The core appeal lies in the access it provides to the Big Snowies and the fantastic recreational options at the nearby lake.
Location and Accessibility: Getting to the Mountain Escape
The Crystal Lake Group Campground is a genuine mountain retreat, requiring a scenic and adventurous drive to reach. It is located near Lewistown, Montana, in a more secluded region of the state's central area. While the remoteness is part of the appeal, potential visitors, especially those towing larger campers or RVs, should plan their travel carefully, paying close attention to road conditions.
The official address for the general area is Crystal Lake Rd, Lewistown, MT 59457, USA.
Access begins by traveling from Lewistown, heading approximately 8-9 miles west on Montana Highway 200/US 87 before turning south onto Crystal Lake Road. The road to the lake transitions from well-maintained gravel to a narrow, paved single-lane road as you climb the final miles into the National Forest. This last section, which can be challenging to navigate, particularly when encountering oncoming traffic or pulling a trailer, demands caution and patience. The drive itself is part of the experience, offering spectacular views, but it is wise to take your time and be prepared for limited space. Note that vehicular access beyond a certain point is typically closed from December 1st through early June, depending on snow conditions, making it a seasonal destination for vehicles.
Services Offered (Group Site Specific)
The group campsite is tailored to handle larger gatherings while maintaining a rustic, authentic Montana camping experience. It’s important to note that the philosophy here is largely "pack it in, pack it out" for trash.
Features / Highlights: Beyond the Campsite
The true highlight of a stay at Crystal Lake Group Campground is the immediate access it offers to the extraordinary natural attractions of the Big Snowy Mountains.

What is Worth Choosing: An Authentic Montana Experience
Why should you choose the Crystal Lake Group Campground for your next Montana outing? The choice hinges on prioritizing the location and the unparalleled recreational access over immediate, secluded campsite aesthetics. While some recent visitors have noted the lack of shade and privacy due to necessary tree removal—describing the campground as "wide open" or "unsightly"—this is a temporary trade-off for safety and long-term vitality.
What is truly worth choosing is the gateway to the Big Snowy Mountains. You are booking access to:
For groups that value challenging mountain access, excellent water recreation, and a functional central hub for their high-elevation adventure, Crystal Lake remains an outstanding, factually-based choice in the heart of Montana. Plan to bring your own shade (canopies) and embrace the open mountain setting as you explore the natural beauty that surrounds this unique group campsite.

Due to the Forest Service fear of "dangerous tree" and their removal, the campground is wide open, no shade, and no privacy. In 100 years it will be nice again.
The lake itself is absolutely gorgeous. The downsides, the road up is crazy narrow. We don't think we're going to chance taking our camper up. We came head on with another Tacoma, driven by a very inexperienced driver. She was too nervous to move over or back up when she still had at least a foot to the side of her vehicle. We barely had enough room to squeeze both of us past. The campground is hideous, they've clear cut it but left all the scrub and stumps so it's just a giant tripping hazard, no shade at all. I’d say this area is great for a day trip or back country camping, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend the unsightly campground. I’m sure they had a reason for doing it, but it just looks sad.
The best little mountain lake in the world. Excellent hiking to soaring cliffs, sparkling waterfalls & 2 different ice caves. Plus the serene 'no wake' lake itself is just right for a romantic canoe ride. Lots of wildflowers too... the Shooting Stars smell like root beer:) Enjoy!
Gorgeous surroundings and plenty of wildlife to see. This lake is off the main highway and requires about 25 mile drive on an unpaved but we'll maintained road. Worth the drive. Once you start ascending into the mountains the scenery is awe inspiring.
This is the best campsite in all of America. It is even one of the safest campsites that i have been too as well. Ever since the USFS deemed the numerous trees dangerous and ordered their removal it has been a much safer and therefore better place to camp for a night or weekend with the entire family. Additionally, the lack of dangerous large trees nearby the various campsites will help prevent campers from absconding in illegal activities with the benefit of cover from the trees. The camper community can now easily police themselves for a safe, happy, and very legal vacation at the foot of Old Baldy! Enjoy your Vacation!!
