The Eastwood Campground Introduce

🌲 **Introduction / Overview**

For Wisconsin residents who believe the best camping is found "way back in the woods," **The Eastwood Campground** provides an authentic, serene escape within the vast beauty of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Located on the eastern side of the 416-acre Mondeaux Flowage, Eastwood offers a quality, rustic camping experience that truly allows visitors to unplug and immerse themselves in the Northern Woods atmosphere. Unlike many highly developed parks, Eastwood is known for its quiet, secluded environment—a perfect sanctuary where you **"couldn't hear traffic and other campers abided by the quiet times."**

Eastwood is one of four National Forest campgrounds situated on the Mondeaux Flowage, a recreation area celebrated for its historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) roots. The campground is nestled in a scenic, mature deciduous forest, ensuring it is **"likely stunning in fall"** when Wisconsin’s hardwoods blaze with color. While historically larger, the campground is currently being adapted to offer a more focused experience. It is being reduced from 22 sites to 12, focusing maintenance on the sites closer to the water. This strategic reduction, part of a broader national forest recreation strategy, ensures the remaining sites are large, well-maintained, and continue to provide the quality experience for which the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is known.

The core appeal of Eastwood is its secluded nature and rustic charm. It is a non-electric campground, emphasizing self-sufficiency and a closer connection to the outdoors, yet it is exceptionally well-maintained by the Forest Service, providing a reliable experience for both tent and self-contained RV campers.

📍 **Location and Accessibility**

The Eastwood Campground is located in a beautifully wooded area near the community of Westboro, in Taylor County, Wisconsin, placing it within the Medford-Park Falls Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The address provided for this secluded spot is:

Forest Rd 104, Westboro, WI 01581, USA

To reach this peaceful haven, Wisconsin users will typically travel north from Medford on State Highway 13, turn onto County Road D, and then follow Forest Road 104 (FR 104) south to the campground entrance. Access involves traveling along **"Gravel roads to get back to the camp sites,"** contributing to the secluded, "way back in the woods" feel. Despite the gravel roads, the sites themselves are described as **"Large spacious camping area,"** making them suitable for a variety of camping units, although RVers should note there are no hookups.

A key accessibility feature is Eastwood's proximity to the heart of the recreation area. It is the closest of the four Mondeaux Flowage campgrounds to the Mondeaux Dam Lodge and the main recreation area, which is a major convenience for campers seeking additional services or activities.

🛠️ **Services Offered**

Eastwood is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as a rustic campground, meaning services are designed to be basic yet reliable. The emphasis is on a quiet, low-impact stay, but essential needs are met, and the overall maintenance is considered "exceptionally well" done.

  • **Campsites (Currently 12 Sites):** The campground is being reduced from 22 sites to 12. These remaining sites are suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs (no hookups).
  • **No Electric Hookups:** All sites are non-electric, catering to rustic and self-contained camping styles.
  • **Water Wells:** **"Has wells for water"** with hand pumps, providing potable water for drinking and cooking.
  • **Vault Toilets:** Accessible and clean vault toilets are provided throughout the campground loops.
  • **Camp Host:** A **"Camp host was on site during our stay"** is often available during the summer season to assist with issues and site management.
  • **Garbage Disposal:** A **"dumpster for garbage"** and recycling facilities are provided, though some information suggests trash collection is not provided within the campground and requires using the dumpster.
  • **Picnic Tables & Fire Rings:** Each spacious site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate.
  • **Dump Station (Nearby):** While there is no dump station at Eastwood, one is located nearby at the Mondeaux Dam Lodge/Picnic Area (Dumping Fees May Apply).
  • **Quiet Hours:** Campers are noted for abiding by the quiet times (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM).

✨ **Features / Highlights**

The Eastwood Campground's appeal is magnified by its location within the Mondeaux Flowage Recreation Area, offering easy access to the region’s best natural and historic features. This area provides a quality of scenery and recreational offerings that many Wisconsinites might only expect to find in the northernmost reaches of the state.

  • **Mondeaux Dam Lodge Proximity:** The campground is **"just a short walk or drive from the Mondeaux Dam Lodge,"** a historic CCC-built structure that offers valuable services including a swimming beach, boat rentals, food concessions, firewood sales, and even showers for a small fee.
  • **Ice Age National Scenic Trail Access:** The campground is close to the **"very well-kept"** Ice Age Trail segment, providing excellent opportunities for hiking and exploring the glacially-formed landscape.
  • **Mondeaux Flowage Water Access:** The 416-acre flowage is accessible for non-motorized and motorized (slow no-wake) recreation. It is popular for fishing (musky, northern pike, crappie, etc.), canoeing, kayaking, and swimming at the nearby beach.
  • **Seclusion and Quiet:** Located in a less-visited area of the Flowage compared to other campgrounds (Spearhead Point, Westpoint), Eastwood offers a premium level of peace and quiet, highly valued by campers.
  • **Stunning Fall Scenery:** The mature deciduous forest setting makes this campground particularly desirable for fall camping, when the leaves of the hardwoods provide spectacular color.
  • **Spacious Sites:** The remaining sites are notably large, offering ample space and privacy between camping parties.
  • **Historic Area:** The entire Mondeaux Dam Recreation Area is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, showcasing beautiful, rustic architecture from the 1930s CCC and WPA projects.

⭐ **What is Worth Choosing**

The Eastwood Campground is the standout choice for the Wisconsin camper who seeks **quiet, rustic solitude without sacrificing access to key amenities**. It's absolutely worth choosing for two main reasons: its **unrivaled sense of peaceful seclusion** and its **convenient proximity to the historic Mondeaux Dam Lodge.**

While other campgrounds on the Flowage may offer more dramatic shoreline views, Eastwood is nestled deeper in the woods, providing a superior quiet-time experience that is difficult to find. The fact that the National Forest is decommissioning the non-waterfront sites further guarantees that the remaining 12 sites will continue to be large, well-spaced, and well-maintained. Crucially, the short walk to the Mondeaux Dam Lodge means that despite being non-electric and rustic, campers have easy access to showers, food concessions, and boat rentals—a perfect blend of primitive camping and modern convenience. For Wisconsin residents looking for a tranquil basecamp to tackle the Ice Age Trail or explore the beautiful, historically rich Mondeaux Flowage, Eastwood offers the best of both worlds.

Nice little campground, way back in the woods. Mosquitos weren't to bad. Large spacious camping area. Verizon service was limited. Gravel roads to get back to the camp sites. Has wells for water and a dumpster for garbage. Camp host was on site during our stay Incase you had any issues. Was quiet and couldn't hear traffic and other campers abided by the quiet times.

Of the four national forest campgrounds on the Mondeaux Flowage, Eastwood is one of the lesser-visited. This campground is being reduced from 22 sites to 12 as of late. The ten sites you pass first while driving the one-way loop - the sites not on the water - are being decommissioned. The sites closer to the water are continuing to be maintained. This reduction is part of a broader recreation strategy being implemented across the Chequamegon Nicolet. It includes decommissioning seven full campgrounds collectively netting 77 campsites and reducing the number of sites and services offered at other locations. The scenery here seems a bit less dynamic than what one can experience on the west side of the flowage at Spearhead Point, Westpoint or Picnic Point campgrounds. The shoreline at those locations may also be a bit nicer and easier to access. That said, Eastwood is nestled in a scenic, mature deciduous forest. It is likely stunning in fall. The campground is just a short walk or drive from the Mondeaux Dam Lodge, where visitors will find a beach and lots of accessible shoreline for fishing. Eastwood is also not far from the Ice Age Trail. The Ice Age segment in this part of the state is very well-kept. The national forest does exceptionally well maintaining all of their campgrounds on the Mondeaux, Eastwood included. Don’t be fooled by the region’s location in central Wisconsin and think you need to go further north for quality rustic camping. The Mondeaux region of the national forest provides a quality of scenery and recreational offerings many may expect to find only in the northernmost reaches of the state.

This is a very nice rustic campground. It's very secluded and each site is surrounded by forest. There us a path that went down to the lake. The bath room facilities were clean, but they still are an outhouse. No hookups here. And the water was shut off due to contamination so you had to I travel down the road to the next campground for water. Overall nice place and would camp here again.

The mosquitos were enough to carry a person away. The sites were clean but you need a Jack hammer to put the tent spikes in.
