The Kosmic Tortoise Introduce
Hey, fellow Californians! Are you craving an extraordinary escape into the vast, mesmerizing beauty of the desert, but with all the comforts of home? If the idea of immersing yourself in nature without sacrificing amenities appeals to you, then The Kosmic Tortoise in Twentynine Palms is a destination you absolutely need to discover. This unique glamping experience offers a fresh take on "camping," providing cozy geodesic domes equipped to make your desert adventure truly unforgettable.
The Kosmic Tortoise is not your typical campground; it’s a thoughtfully designed glamping retreat that blends the allure of the Californian desert with modern conveniences. It's perfect for those who love the idea of outdoor living but prefer a comfortable bed, air conditioning, and a private space. While the location offers an authentic desert experience, it’s important to understand the specific setup to ensure your expectations align with what’s offered. This guide will walk you through what to expect, from its serene location to the unique amenities that set it apart, helping you plan your perfect desert getaway from a local California perspective.
The Kosmic Tortoise is situated at 4041 Peter Rabbit Trail, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, USA. This location places it in the high desert of California, close to the famed Joshua Tree National Park. For Californians, reaching this unique destination typically involves a scenic drive, transitioning from paved roads to less-traveled pathways as you get closer to the property. As some visitors have noted, the journey involves a shift from a two-way road to an unmarked road, then to gravel, dirt, and back to gravel. This adventurous approach is part of the desert experience, leading you to a secluded and peaceful setting.
While it’s closer to the Marine Base than the main Joshua Tree National Park entrance, it’s still very accessible to the park’s wilderness. The Twentynine Palms entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is an easy 15-minute drive from the property, making it an excellent base for exploring the park’s unique rock formations, desert flora, and vast open spaces. The secluded nature of the property, away from the immediate hustle and bustle, is a key draw for those seeking quiet and unobstructed views of the desert landscape and night sky. Given the variable road conditions, especially after rain, it’s always a good idea to check local weather and road advisories before heading out, ensuring a smooth arrival to your desert oasis.
The Kosmic Tortoise offers a carefully curated set of amenities within its geodesic domes, designed to provide a comfortable and convenient glamping experience:
- Private Geodesic Domes: Each booking includes a private, contemporary, secure, and electrified dome. There are two domes on the property, designed for privacy.
- Climate Control: Domes are equipped with both an air-conditioning unit for warm days and an electric fireplace/heater for chilly nights, ensuring comfort regardless of the desert’s temperature swings. However, it's worth noting that guests may need to request temperature adjustments from hosts, as the remote for the AC might not be readily available in the dome.
- Comfortable Bedding: Each dome features a queen-size bed with a super comfortable mattress and plenty of extra blankets and cushions. An inflatable twin air mattress may be available for a third person, though it might come at an additional cost, so confirming this directly with the hosts beforehand is recommended.
- Private Bathroom Facilities: Each dome has a private outdoor bathroom with a sink and a hot shower. It's important to note that the toilet is a clean porta-potty, which is a common setup for glamping in remote desert areas.
- Mini-Kitchen Setup: A mini-fridge for storing food and water is provided, along with kitchenware, plates, cutlery, coffee mugs, a French press, and basic spices. Hot and cold water is available.
- Outdoor Cooking and Relaxation: Each dome has a private gas grill with a cooktop, a picnic table, and an outside fire pit (gas-powered, for easy use and compliance with fire restrictions). Outdoor seating and a hammock are also provided.
- Connectivity: Fast Wi-Fi is available, along with outlets for charging devices.
- Entertainment and Comfort Extras: Board games and star charts are provided for entertainment. Complementary bottles of water, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are also included.
- Self Check-in: A punch-pad system allows for convenient self check-in.
The Kosmic Tortoise offers several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for a California getaway:
- Stargazing Paradise: Located in a dark sky area, the property offers unparalleled opportunities for stargazing and astrophotography. The unobstructed desert views make for truly spectacular night skies.
- Sunrise Views from Bed: Dome 2, in particular, is noted for its east-facing orientation, allowing guests to witness breathtaking sunrises directly from the comfort of their bed.
- Unique Outdoor Shower Experience: The private outdoor shower provides a memorable experience, allowing you to shower under the open sky, potentially while seeing stars at night.
- Peaceful and Secluded Setting: The domes are situated on open land at the rear of the property with a private road, ensuring a sense of tranquility and privacy, especially if you select Dome 2.
- Proximity to Joshua Tree National Park: While not directly adjacent, its convenient 15-minute drive to the Twentynine Palms entrance of Joshua Tree National Park makes it an ideal base for exploring one of California's most iconic natural landmarks.
- Thoughtful Amenities for Glamping: The extensive list of amenities, from cooking utensils and spices to board games and an AC unit, minimizes what guests need to bring, making for a truly hassle-free "camping" experience.
- Comfortable Accommodations: The emphasis on a comfortable bed and climate control ensures a relaxing stay, even in the desert's extreme temperatures.

I wanted to love this place, but I can’t… and I understand it’s glamping, but online it says the room is kept at 70 degrees, it was a hot summer day and the dome was 74, there was no notification that they kept the remote for the AC, so I had to send a text to get it to the advertised 70degrees. *The toilet is a porta potty, while it was clean, it’s still a port a potty in the desert, I wish I would have known this prior to booking. *On their booking page it says they have an air mattress for a third person, I emailed Reena about a 3rd person, when we arrived, there was no air mattress. When I mentioned it to Evan, he said it would be an extra cost of $30, so I declined, happy we brought our sleeping bag instead :) Learn from me and pick Dome 2… you will have more privacy from the other patrons. People staying at Dome 2, drive through Dome 1 parking and eating area, our neighbors parked in front of our eating area, rather than in front of their own lodging… later it was moved, but I think there needs to be a bigger sign that shows where Dome 2 people should park vs Dome 1. While I wouldn’t stay here again, my kids enjoyed themselves. The grill and fire pit worked just fine. For location, you’re closer to the Marine Base than you are to Joshua Tree. Also heading to the Domes, you’ll go from a two way road, to a non marked road, to gravel, to dirt… then back to gravel. I will say the mattress was super comfortable!
My hubby loves camping and outdoor cooking, I don't so the compromise is glamping. We've done it in other places and this has been the best when it comes to amenities. We had the food ready for the grill and I always bring half my kitchen so we can cook, but all that was not necessary here. Utensils, spices, plates, cutlery, French press, hot and cold water, mini fridge, heater, AC, comfy bed, lots of extra blankets, cushions, board games, star charts, one hammock, grill, outside fire pit. It was peaceful, our dome was facing east so we got to see the sunrise from the bed. The shower is outside, very cool to take a shower while seeing the stars. I wish we could have gotten there right at check in time to enjoy more of it.
The Kosmic Tortoise in Joshua Tree is the perfect desert retreat—peaceful, beautifully curated, and surrounded by stunning landscapes. Evan was incredibly welcoming and knew so much about the property and its unique connection to the desert, making the stay even more special. When we couldn’t get the grill started, he was quick to help, and later, when our fire went out, he responded right away to get it going again. He also shared fascinating insights about the land, the best spots to stargaze, and how to fully experience the retreat’s atmosphere. Whether you’re here to explore, unwind, or just take in the scenery, this place has it all.
Overall, the location was good. However, we experienced several issues while staying here. The grill and the fire pit did not work. We followed the instructions exactly. That was disappointing. We could not control the heat/AC as there was no remote. Because we couldn’t control it, it was freezing at night. There were no lights outside and the bathroom is a port-a-potty. For what you get, I think it was too expensive compared to other lodging that have a real bathroom.
Still, quiet, desert sunset, sunrise, night jewelled sparkling stars and soft shrouded milky way. Comfy bed, direct the air flow flap above head. Fan is just right. Dome is fun with view especially in the sunrise morning as it invites you outside. Fun showering outside enclosure in flip flops. I declined the cowboy trough soak with water like swimming pool water. Drove to Joshua Tree National Park after. Hosts were wonderful, friendly, supportive, welcoming, heart full. Helped me drive there, walked me through my place, gave art tour. If you want to use the gas fireplace I recommend watching how then practice in front of him to ensure you get it right. Love all the attention to details. Lots of thought and care. I was the only one. Felt safe. Next to owner's home with 1 other dome which was empty. It was 107 degrees, dropped to less at night. Early July. Very private.
