Customer reviews present a mixed picture of this campground. While some appreciate the amenities, such as the pool and clubhouse, which are reported to be clean, others have expressed significant concerns. Issues include unclean campsites with trash, difficulties navigating the park with larger RVs (37ft+), and confusion regarding reservations and site assignments.
Specifically, reviews mention the following:
- Clean pool and clubhouse.
- Unclean campsites with trash.
- Tight and narrow roads, making navigation difficult for large RVs.
- Confusion regarding reservations and first-come, first-served site assignments.
- Potential for limited or no cell phone service.
- Reports of staff inconsistencies and early clubhouse closures.
- Unwanted sales calls after booking.
Potential visitors, especially those with larger RVs, should be aware of the reported challenges with site accessibility and reservation management. It is strongly advised to confirm site availability and specific site details directly with the campground.
Thousand Trails Whalers Rest offers coastal camping with amenities, but potential visitors should consider the reported issues before booking.

Customer Reviews
Amenities are nice. Pool and clubhouse were clean. Our camp spot was not.. small pieces of trash all over and larger items shown in the photos. Staff is decent, although got kicked out of the clubhouse 15 mins early on a Saturday because they had better things to do and leave early. Didn't appreciate a sales call 15 mins after booking.
Such a disappointment. Unfortunately was the worst place we stayed during out 2 month trip. We are not Thousand Trails members & feel this campground was misrepresented during all conversations in the reservation process. We were prepared for old campground. We were told & prepared for no cell phone service. To say this campground was tight & narrow is putting it kindly. NOT FOR RIGS 37ft+ unless you are completely comfortable threading a needle & dodging parked vehicles. We made a reservation a year in advance for a large unit pull through site. NO WHERE & AT NO TIME did it say first come first serve for getting a site. Did get a check in email the morning of arrival that said something about first come first serve but it didn't even register as we had made a reservation. On arrival we were told oh just go find a spot... we said what about our reservation & was told, there may be one still open at the back of the park. Navigating the park, we stopped to make sure we were in the right area. At that time, a Class A flew around us on the right almost hitting us & zoomed into the spot we were deciding how to get into. Tried 2 other spots & we were unable to get into them due to trees & parked cars. Went back to the gate & staff did offer our money back BUT it was labor day weekend & we had booked for 7 days. Staff was kind & suggested a few other spots. Got into a back in but barely fit with worries our truck would get hit the whole week. Yes, firepit did have trash in it from previous campers. Will never ever recommend this campground.
Negative feedback is not our bag but this stop went too far. We arrived to Site 75 and found garbage in the firepit and thrown about the bushes. It rained the entire 7 days so firepit wasn't needed. Upon leaving apparently they decided that checkout was 11 instead of 12 (like all the other TT sites). So they knock on the RV at 11:01 to let us know (instead of at check in) and I tell her about the firepit and garbage. She left for a few minutes while we frantically pack up and came back to tell us that thefirepit and garbage was OUR responsibility to clean up. I let her know we are not liars and wont be cleaning that up for THEM. My wife came out and the employee decided to argue with her as well. We left completely frustrated and extremely upset at the confrontational employee who was completely out of line. We then checked the reviews and lo and behold the first review to pop up was a review of over a month old from the exact same site with the exact same cottage cheese lid, potatoes, and different garbage in the pit. So to the employee that called us liars, maybe check your reviews while your doing your research, before you look silly. We are not going back to this location unless changes are made. Already canceled our next 2 stays and working on the rest.
4 stars for location near Newport! 2 stars for w/e only with all sites in heavily wooded loops. Very narrow sites and literally on top of your neighbor. Sites are short so tow vehicles hang out in road. Have good wifi at clubhouse and nice indoor pool. Not big rig friendly and we are only 32 ft.
Kind and helpful, hardworking staff. Laundry, Pool, & Fitness center. Coffee. Great campground & beautiful cabins.
Gorgeous area. Beautiful campground. Our first site was way too small for our rig, but park ranger Cindy was super-helpful getting us a bigger site. We didn't book a long enough stay to fully enjoy the area but we will definitely be back. Cindy was also very friendly and courteous on our way out.
I'm enjoying my stay here. This is my 2nd stay this summer. I've been very pleased with the new reassigned space process. Its reduced my stress on arrival, not having to search for a spot. Also the sites I've been assigned have been perfect. They've also been sites I've never had a chance to use in the past 10 years I've been coming hear because they're never available when I arrive. Im enjoying this process so well, I'm almost concerned about how it will be when they shift to allowing use to select our specific site in the next phase. The computerized system is working so well, in my opinion. In addition to the sites I'm enjoying the trails in the park area in the center of the South side of the campground.
I camp at Whalers Rest whenever I can. It is a beautiful campground, full amenities and located on a fun stretch of the Oregon coast. I have had great luck crabbing and clamming in Waldport, and the town of Newport has all the amenities you might need. And it still feels calm and serene and remote.
Corporate is at it again screwing us all over! They are trying to say that 90% of their members wanted assigned campsites. Well I never received a questionnaire or ballot nor has anybody else that I have spoken with. It is totally screwed up. The computer assignes you to a site but it doesn't know your wants and needs are. It assigns you to a site period and if you don't like it then you can just leave. Which then allows corporate to give that site to the General Public and charge them $77 a night. Corporate greed at its worst. Everyone I have spoken with is very angry and unfortunately they are taking it out on the employees who don't seem to like it anymore than we do.
Coming here was a mistake, this campground caters to long term and is not short term friendly, they crammed us into a spot with 2 other campers in a space that should be a single, the one in the middle has absolutely no room to be outside, The reservation process is a complete dumpster fire, can't choose a site, they say to reserve online but need to also call to complete and still don't receive a site until arrival. They advertise WiFi but there was none at our site, no Verizon cell service anywhere in the park, too heavy tree canopy for satellite, sites are crammed in everywhere with heavy emphasis on quantity, not quality,
