Ohio's diverse geography, from the shores of Lake Erie to the rolling Appalachian foothills, provides a myriad of opportunities for outdoor recreation. For locals, finding a campground that meets their specific needs – whether it's for an RV, a tent, or a seasonal stay – is crucial. Timber Ridge, with its established presence in the Amherst community, aims to cater to a variety of camping styles.
It's important to approach any camping experience with clear expectations, especially when choosing a privately owned campground. Timber Ridge, like any established facility, has its own unique characteristics. Understanding its offerings, from the types of sites available to the overall atmosphere and amenities, helps ensure that your visit aligns with your camping preferences. Timber Ridge Campground is conveniently located at 51900 Portman Rd #9692, Amherst, OH 44001, USA. For Ohio residents, this address places the campground within easy driving distance from several major population centers. Amherst itself is situated in Lorain County, just a short drive from larger cities like Elyria and Lorain, and approximately an hour's drive west of Cleveland. This makes Timber Ridge an accessible option for those looking for a weekend escape without having to embark on an excessively long journey across the state.
The location on Portman Road suggests a setting that balances accessibility with a sense of being away from urban congestion. Amherst, as a community, offers basic services such as grocery stores, gas stations, and local dining options, which can be convenient for campers needing to resupply or enjoy a meal out. The proximity to Lake Erie, while not directly adjacent, means that the campground is within a reasonable distance for day trips to the lakefront, offering additional recreational opportunities like fishing, boating, or simply enjoying the scenic shores that are so iconic to Northern Ohio.
However, prospective campers, particularly those driving larger RVs or rigs, should be aware of the internal access roads within the campground itself. Based on customer feedback, some access roads have been described as having significant potholes and deep craters. This is an important consideration for navigation and the comfort of your vehicle. While the overall location of the campground is convenient for many Ohioans, internal road conditions are a practical detail to keep in mind when planning your visit and maneuvering within the park. It highlights the importance of cautious driving once you arrive on site, especially if you are in a large vehicle that could be significantly affected by uneven surfaces. This information is crucial for local users who understand Ohio road conditions and value smooth travel.

When contacting Timber Ridge Campground, it is advisable to be prepared to discuss specific site availability, current rates, and any payment preferences or policies, as previous feedback mentions a cash/check-only policy for payments. It is also a good opportunity to inquire about the current condition of access roads if you are driving a large RV or a vehicle that might be sensitive to rough terrain, to ensure a smooth arrival.
For Ohio residents, Timber Ridge Campground in Amherst offers a distinct camping experience that, while having its quirks, can be suitable for a particular type of local camper. Its location in Lorain County makes it easily accessible from major population centers like Cleveland, Akron, and Toledo, allowing for a relatively short drive to an outdoor escape. This accessibility is a major plus for Ohioans looking for a convenient weekend getaway without spending excessive time on the road, maximizing their time enjoying the outdoors.
The campground's ability to accommodate both RVs and tents means it can cater to a wide range of local campers, from families with elaborate setups to individuals seeking a simpler tenting experience. While it's crucial for prospective visitors to be aware of the "NYC quality potholes" on the access roads and the cash/check-only payment policy, these factors inform the type of experience one should expect. For those with robust vehicles accustomed to varied road conditions, or those who prefer to pay with traditional methods, these details might be less of a deterrent and more of an expectation for a more rustic, no-frills camping environment.
Ultimately, Timber Ridge Campground could be a good fit for Ohioans who prioritize convenience, seek a traditional campground setting, and are prepared for a slightly aged but "fairly well maintained" facility. It offers a local option for creating cherished outdoor memories, whether it's fishing, enjoying campfires, or simply unwinding in a natural setting. Understanding the unique characteristics of Timber Ridge upfront ensures that local campers can make an informed decision and enjoy their time in Amherst, embracing the reality of the facilities and focusing on the core joy of camping in our beautiful state.

Customer Reviews
I typically do not give negative reviews but I feel it is warranted in this instance. The access roads had NYC quality potholes, some 8 inches deep all throughout the parks access roads. Additionally, at $95 a night (cash or check only, no debit or credit card), the price did not justify the aged facilities that were fairly well maintained. If you are driving a large rig, beware of the craters that will have your rig rocking from point a to b!!
I'm creating a review for my Mother. She was a frequent customer of this campground. She had a reservation so she arrived and checked in to her spot. During check in she informed the employee that she would be leaving a day earlier than intended. The employee told her she would be refunded for that night she wouldn't be there. At some point during her stay a rude woman calling herself the manager knocked on her RV and told her she was in the wrong lot because they had moved her spot. During check in my Mother was not informed that her spot had been changed. This "manager" also informed her that she would not be receiving a refunded. My Mother packed up and hightailed it out of there. Never, ever again will we be staying there. They have lost a good customer. My Mother is only polite and respectful to everybody and to be treated like this is completely ridiculous.
We stayed in one of the small cabins and loved it! It was really clean and everything looked new. I would definitely stay there again but I would bring some paper and tape to cover up the window in the door because it got light in the cabin by 6:30am. It also didn't get very dark in the cabin at night due to the bright red exit sign over the door and the porch light, which you couldn't turn off. These were the only drawbacks for us. They had tons of activities going on and free breakfast Sunday morning. There's an indoor pool but we never used it. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and modern. Don't leave anything outside. We bought a large bundle of firewood and even though we hid it behind a large tree next to our cabin someone still stole it.
We were happy with this campground. We use the Bathhouse when we travel and this one was newly remodelled and very clean! Pool house is amazing. Sites are on cement pads with ample room between trailers!
We enjoyed most of the summer at Timber Ridge. Our lake lot was quite lovely and had a concrete pad. There were lots of activities going on, including live music on a couple of the Saturday nights. Super nice managers here!
