Welcome to Tipsinah Mounds Campground, a truly distinctive destination within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, nestled in the picturesque west-central region of Minnesota, on the tranquil shores of Pomme de Terre Lake. Owned and operated by the City of Elbow Lake, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty, extensive recreational opportunities, and a fascinating connection to Native American history, making it an ideal retreat for local users and visitors seeking both adventure and relaxation.
The environment at Tipsinah Mounds Campground is exceptionally rich and diverse. Sheltered by majestic oak trees and bordered by the gently lapping waters of Pomme de Terre Lake, the campground provides a serene and scenic backdrop for any outdoor escape. Pomme de Terre Lake itself is a significant feature, stretching approximately 4 miles long and encompassing over 1,700 acres. The Pomme de Terre River runs through the lake, with a low water dam at the south end, just off the campground, offering excellent shoreline fishing opportunities. The campground's natural setting is further enhanced by nearly 40 Indian burial mounds located east of the park's entrance road, believed to have been constructed between 1000 A.D. and 1600 A.D. These ancient mounds, along with archaeological findings dating back to 9000 B.C., highlight the deep historical significance of this land, which was once a natural shelter and summer camp for the Chippewa Indians and a boundary between the Dakota Plains and Chippewa territories. The name "Tipsinah" itself comes from the Sioux Indian name for a turnip-like plant used for food, later translated to "Pomme de Terre" (fruit or apple of the earth) by French fur traders. This blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue creates a unique atmosphere for exploration and reflection. Guests can expect a peaceful ambiance with rustling leaves, gentle waters, and breathtaking sunsets, providing a genuine sense of escape and connection to the past.
Tipsinah Mounds Campground is committed to providing a comfortable and convenient experience for all its guests, offering a robust suite of services typical of a well-equipped establishment in the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. For RV campers, the campground features over 25 spacious RV sites, many of which are full hookup, providing electricity (20, 30, and 50 amp service), water, and sewer connections. Many sites are also pull-through accessible, making it easy for big rigs to maneuver. For tent campers, designated tenting options are available. The campground prides itself on its clean, well-lit bath facilities with hot showers, ensuring a refreshing experience for all. Laundry facilities are also on-site for guest convenience. A central General Store offers essential items such as bait, tackle, ice, fishing supplies, groceries, and gifts, with convenient weekend hours and weekday access by request. To ensure guest safety and well-being, the park and campground are routinely police-patrolled, and dedicated caretakers live on the grounds, providing a constant presence and assistance. In addition, the campground features a 20'x80′ FEMA-approved concrete storm shelter, prioritizing guest safety during severe weather. Free internet Wi-Fi is available throughout the grounds, allowing campers to stay connected. A dump station is provided for RVs, and a fish cleaning station is available for anglers. The City of Elbow Lake owns and operates the campground, emphasizing a community-focused approach to guest satisfaction, with caretakers Miah and Val Ulrich committed to ensuring a memorable stay. Pets are permitted but must have proof of current vaccinations and be kept on a leash at all times, with a designated pet walk area available. Had a very great time there with my family reunion. This would be abt the tenth reunion at the same place and we're booked again for next year. Now it's 2023 & we had another great year at tipsanah.. this is about 12 years coming back here. We had a very great time again. The kids have a great time at the fenced in playground. That is located quite close to the bathrooms so it's handy... the original bathrooms are getting to be quite old but they try to keep them clean and stocked, but they can't follow behind every person to make sure it wasnt left messy.. some people have a tendency to leave a mess no matter where they go!!!! Thank you Mia and gang for keeping up the place and making sure our camping times are good times..
What a treat! The family that runs this spot is super nice. We showed up late and they allowed us to buy pizza (which took an extra 15 minutes of their off-work time). We had campsite P6 - it was perfect for us: pretty, quiet (except for the loons), easy lake access, and very clean. I can highly recommend this campground.
We absolutely loved our stay at Tipsinah Mounds! Admittedly, it was an unexpected stop for us as we were traveling to Glacier National Park, but well worth it!!! While traveling in our RV, we had a flat tire on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. AAA roadside and every other roadside assistance were all unavailable. My wife finally found Tipsinah Mounds campground after calling every other campground within a few miles and they had just had a last minute cancellation. Of course we booked, did a quick temp repair on the tire (wrapped the valve stem in gorilla tape) and backtracked 25 miles. The campground is awesome! Super clean, great staff and we had a wonderful stay. Jeremiah, the park manager, and his family are all over any needs you may have and were always available when we needed them. We were lakeside on the Pomme de Terre lake and rented the pontoon boat for the time we were there. Beautiful and very clear lake! During our stay over Memorial Day weekend, the camp staff had arranged for the valve stem in our tire to be replaced and reinstalled. We were back up in running in a day, but we stayed the extra day to further enjoy the property and trails. And try the pizza they serve…highly recommended. We were certainly lucky that they had availability, and even luckier that it was a wonderful property!!! Thanks to all the staff at the campground!!! We truly appreciated all of them!
So wonderful and beautiful and everyone is so nice. Thank you so much. I couldn’t believe how clean the showers and bathrooms were. Gosh ! Highly recommend !
