Toohey Lake Rustic Campground Introduce
🏞️ **Introduction / Overview**
For Minnesota residents who cherish the rugged beauty of the North Shore and seek a genuine, affordable outdoor experience, **Toohey Lake Rustic Campground** offers an ideal retreat. Located deep within the **Superior National Forest**, this small, charming campground is defined by its designation as "rustic," meaning it provides essential amenities without the crowds or costs associated with more developed sites. It’s the perfect spot for self-sufficient campers looking to unplug and immerse themselves in the deep woods environment near the scenic town of Tofte.
Toohey Lake Rustic Campground features only **seven sites**, creating a cozy and less-traveled atmosphere. It operates on a **first-come, first-served basis** and, importantly, is generally **free of charge** to use, making it an excellent budget-friendly base for exploring the surrounding forest and the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The atmosphere here is one of simple outdoor living, centered around the peaceful, shallow waters of Toohey Lake, which is particularly inviting for non-motorized activities like canoeing and kayaking. Local users consistently return for the quiet environment and the ease of access to the water.

📍 **Location and Accessibility**
Toohey Lake Rustic Campground is situated inland from Lake Superior's North Shore in the vast **Superior National Forest**, part of the **Tofte Ranger District**. Its official location is **The Grade, Tofte, MN 55615, USA**.
Access is manageable but requires driving on forest service roads:
- **Driving Route:** From Minnesota Highway 61 in Tofte, users typically take County Road 2 (the Sawbill Trail) north for approximately 15 miles.
 - **Forest Road Access:** Turn west onto **FR 170 (The Grade)**, which is a graded, gravel forest road. The campground is located about 5 miles down The Grade on the right side.
 - **Vehicle Suitability:** While the main forest roads are generally well-maintained, the area is remote, and conditions can vary seasonally. Most vehicles can access the site, but some sections of the road may benefit from higher ground clearance.
 - **Campsite Access:** All seven sites are designed as **pull-in areas**, making them car-camping accessible. The campground also offers dedicated trailer parking near the boat launch.

Its remote yet road-accessible location allows for a quick escape into the forest without the complexities of a major portage route, providing easy proximity to other recreational points along the Sawbill Trail and nearby rustic campgrounds like Fourmile Lake.

⚙️ **Services Offered**
As a "Rustic Campground" within the Superior National Forest, Toohey Lake provides limited, core services necessary for a primitive camping experience. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient in most areas, embracing the "pack it in, pack it out" ethos of the forest.
The minimal, essential services available at Toohey Lake Rustic Campground include:
- **Individual Site Equipment:** Each of the seven sites is equipped with a **picnic table** and a permanent **steel fire ring** with a cooking grate.
 - **Sanitation:** A single, shared **vault toilet** (outhouse) is provided near the entrance/dock area to manage human waste.
 - **Water Access:** Direct access to **Toohey Lake** is available via a dock and boat launch. **No potable (drinking) water is supplied.** All lake water must be filtered, purified, or boiled before consumption.
 - **Boat Launch:** A functional boat launch and trailer parking are available for accessing Toohey Lake. The lake is noted for being relatively shallow, making it best suited for canoes, kayaks, and smaller fishing boats.
 - **Free Use:** The campground is one of the free, first-come, first-served camping opportunities in the Superior National Forest, eliminating camping fees.

**Crucially, there is no trash pickup, no electricity, and no running water or showers.** Campers must pack out all garbage, including fish remains, to maintain the site's cleanliness and deter bears.

🌟 **Features / Highlights**
Toohey Lake Rustic Campground is favored by local campers for several distinct features that enhance the rustic experience:
- **Genuine Rustic Experience:** With only seven sites and minimal services, the campground delivers a high degree of tranquility and isolation, standing in contrast to larger, more developed campgrounds along the North Shore.
 - **First-Come, First-Served Access:** The lack of a reservation system offers spontaneity, which is highly valued by flexible Minnesota travelers. However, it also means securing one of the seven sites requires an early arrival during peak season.
 - **Direct Lake Access:** The presence of a **boat launch** and the potential for some sites (Site 7 is often noted) to have direct, private access to the lake's wooded shoreline makes it perfect for paddlers and those who enjoy quick access to fishing and swimming.
 - **Ideal for Paddling:** Toohey Lake is described as shallow, which, while limiting for large motorboats, creates an excellent environment for safe and enjoyable **kayaking and canoeing**.
 - **Old Railroad Grade Road:** The access road ("The Grade") follows the route of an old railroad, adding a historical touch to the drive through the forest.
 - **Cozy and Private Sites:** Despite its small size, reviews suggest that individual sites are well-designed with a pull-in area and a tent pad spot, giving a feeling of separation and privacy, like having your own "outdoor living room."

📞 **Contact Information**
Toohey Lake Rustic Campground is managed by the **U.S. Forest Service** through the **Tofte Ranger District** of the Superior National Forest. The site itself is unstaffed, so all official inquiries, condition updates, and questions about forest rules (including generator hours, which are enforced quiet hours) should be directed to the Ranger District office.
**Address:** The Grade, Tofte, MN 55615, USA (Physical Location)
**Tofte Ranger District (Administrative Office):** 7355 West Hwy 61, Tofte, MN 55615
**Phone (Tofte Ranger District):** (218) 663-8060
**Mobile Phone (Administrative):** +1 218-663-8060 (The primary landline number is generally the best for general inquiries.)
Campers should be aware that quiet hours are strictly enforced between **10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.** As noted in customer feedback, this rule is essential for maintaining the quiet environment, and issues with noise, such as generators running during these hours, should be reported to the authorities if they violate the posted rules or become disruptive.

👍 **What is Worth Choosing**
Toohey Lake Rustic Campground is an exceptional choice for the Minnesota camper who values **true rustic simplicity and affordability**. The overwhelming consensus, exemplified by the sentiment, **"Great place to camp!!! Come here every year!!!! The best and only way to camp!!"** speaks to a dedicated, satisfied user base.
The core value proposition of Toohey Lake is its status as a **free, first-come, first-served haven** offering direct lake access. For local outdoor lovers, it provides a much-needed alternative to expensive, crowded, or heavily booked developed campgrounds. It serves as a perfect, no-frills base camp for fishing, paddling, or simply relaxing by a fire within the Superior National Forest. While users must be prepared for the self-sufficiency required by the lack of potable water and trash service, this very requirement attracts a respectful community of campers. If your idea of the "best" camping is one defined by peaceful solitude, a crackling campfire under the Northwoods stars, and the ease of a simple lakeside site, Toohey Lake Rustic Campground on The Grade near Tofte is absolutely worth the drive.

Customer Reviews
Neighbors have a generator who wanna run it all night? If you want to report another camper who is rude about it, 911 works. There is no medical exemption, that’s what the big fancy places are for, where campers go if they don’t want to hear the birds over the din of generators.
Great place to camp!!! Come here every year!!!! The best and only way to camp!!
One of the best rustic campgrounds we've visited in the Superior National Forest. Will definitely be going back.
Stay away! I want this nice place to myself! 🤫🤐😉
Get out into the wilderness without the people and without the attractive accommodations that most folks "need" in order to survive! It is rustic and perfect. Very quiet and always a great way to get away.
