We always dry camp in the disbursed camping area. It is $20 per night. You have access to pit toilets and garbage in the mail camping area. It is peaceful, serene and the view across the lake is gorgeous. This last visit there were several adorable cottontail bunnies. There are also a lot of birds from many types of ducks and diving birds to white pelicans. One of our favorite spots.
Dropped by to relax and eat lunch while passing by. Day use fee was only five bucks. Type of place you visit if you like floating in water, kayaking or jet skiing. No hiking, but one short trail. East side was closed. Day use areas have few spots with trees. Bring shade tent. No tables for day use. Bring chairs. Lake is easily accessible. Plenty of RV sites if that's your thing (ten dollar fee).
I visit here every year, but this time I think I'm staying for a week on the coldest day when the weather is the worst. I did Dispersed camping right next to the lake, and I was afraid that the trailer was shaken by the strong wind I saw for the first time in the world, so I moved to the hook up site and camped for 3 days again. I've spent a dream-like time in a place where no one was around. I highly recommend this place.
It's close to home, and the sites are well-kept. The upper loop has water and power, while the lower spots are dry. When the water levels are high, you get to be right on the water. There are fire pits and picnic tables at each spot, with water spouts available about every 5 spots. Mature cottonwood trees offer afternoon shade, and each camp spot has a smaller tree or two within it. Depending on the time of year, these trees are overrun with bugs... mosquitoes mainly. It can get brutal. Do not let this detour you from coming. Just prepare accordingly. There is a nice grass area and playground for the kids, along with nice paved roads for bike riding. The facilities are fantastic and well-kept, and include showers.
We were in a tough situation and by the grace of God stumbled upon Topaz Lake Recreation Area. We got to meet the park ranger Jonathan and his coworker Dennis. They are very friendly, gracious, and hard working. We highly recommend visiting the recreation area! It’s clean, well kept with very nice campsites. We would definitely come back! Oh, the office crew is up there too!
