Often referred to simply as "Hillcrest River Campground," this spot offers a peaceful retreat for both tent and RV campers, promising a memorable outdoor adventure just a short drive from home. It's a place where you can truly unwind, enjoy the natural beauty of Western Maryland, and create lasting memories with friends and family.
Hillcrest River Campground is a "nice little campground" known for its serene environment and prime location. It's particularly celebrated for offering "very private, level, next to the water, and had some shade" campsites, making it an excellent choice for a comfortable and relaxing stay. One review highlighted how a group of eight friends found plenty of space for multiple large tents and pop-up tents, underscoring the generous size of the sites. While the official name might include "Tractor World," the camping experience itself is purely focused on providing a quality outdoor escape, with the "Tractor World" component referring to the owner's other business. This campground fosters a welcoming atmosphere, with many visitors praising the friendly and helpful nature of the hosts, Diana and Donnelly, who are often noted for their accommodating service, such as showing campers various sites before they decide on one. It combines the peace of a riverside setting with convenient access to local attractions, offering a truly relaxing and enjoyable experience for all types of campers.
Hillcrest River Campground is conveniently located at 10408 Hillcrest Drive, Elizabeth st & 1, Cumberland, MD 21502, USA. Cumberland, situated in Allegany County, is a historic city in Western Maryland, known as the "Queen City" and a gateway to the Appalachian Mountains. This location offers significant advantages for Maryland residents, as it's easily accessible from major interstates, specifically being "1/10 mile off of I-68 Exit 45." This makes it an ideal stopover for those traveling through, or a quick weekend escape for those living in other parts of the state.
The campground's proximity to the Potomac River provides beautiful waterfront views and direct access to water-based activities. Furthermore, its location is a major highlight for outdoor enthusiasts, as it’s just "2 miles from the National Trails," referring to the renowned Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the C&O Canal Towpath. This proximity means campers can easily transition from their site to miles of scenic walking and biking trails. While some reviews mention being "by a gas station" or hearing "some traffic noise from I-68," the overall sentiment is that the peaceful river setting and private sites largely outweigh these minor considerations. The camp's direct drive-in access ensures that all types of vehicles, including large RVs, can comfortably reach their chosen spot.

Campers can easily walk or bike along these historic trails, exploring scenic stretches and even crossing the river on a converted railroad bridge to see a train tunnel.
- Friendly and Accommodating Hosts: Despite a contentious review regarding a separate "Tractor World" interaction, numerous campers highlight the "very friendly and personable" nature of the campground hosts, Diana and Donnelly, who are noted for being "helpful" and showing campers various sites. Customer Reviews
We could not have asked for a better location for a weekend camping trip for 8 friends. Our site was very private, level, next to the water, and had some shade. We had 8 tents, some were huge, plus 2 pop up tents and we had plenty of space to relax. Our plan was to hike at Rocky Gap State Park each day but we never made it. The campground and a short tour of the property and tunnel were all that we needed. Diana and Donelly are very friendly and personable. They showed my friend a few sites before she decided on one. They were very friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back!
I had bought a riding mower from this man 2 years ago. I now need to buy another one. Called him on the phone to see what he had available. He was very rude and very nasty to me. All I done was ask him how he was doing. You should never be rude to customers who would have spent money. After I wrote this he actually called me back and ask me what my problem was. All I have done was ask this gentleman how he was doing. His actual response was, and I quote, "That's between me and my Doctor" all he had to do was say I am fine. Then he proceeded to tell me I was a baby and have thin skin. Trust me I have been around the block many times. So in conclusion. I would never deal with this cranky old man. If someone is willing to spend 1200 or more, I think I would be a little nicer.
If you like cranky, obnoxious, rude people, this is the #1 place in Cumberland I've found. The real irony is the Bible verses he has posted all over.
So glad we found this quaint campground! Beautiful views and great people who own it! They make you feel like family! We will be back someday!
Beautiful spot for campground! Lovely owners. Quite and peaceful! Love it here
