Twining Campground Introduce

Welcome to Twining Campground, located in Taos Ski Valley, NM 87525. As a part of the 'Campgrounds & RV Parks' category, this campground offers a unique camping experience with excellent access to hiking trails and nearby amenities.

Twining Campground is highly regarded as a prime location for hikers and backpackers. It serves as an excellent base camp for those planning to explore trails leading to Williams Lake and Wheeler Peak. The campground's proximity to these trails makes it a convenient starting point for outdoor adventures.

One of the unique aspects of Twining Campground is its location within the Taos Ski Valley area. Campers will find themselves camping above the main parking lot of the ski resort and south of the Bull of the Woods trailhead. This proximity offers the unusual experience of camping within a ski resort environment. Additionally, restaurants, bars, and general stores are within walking distance, providing convenient access to amenities.

The campground itself is not heavily advertised, and visitors may find it challenging to locate initially. While the board indicates four official campsites, some visitors have reported finding only three. However, there are multiple "dispersed" camping sites nearby, offering additional options. Parking is generally not an issue in the Taos Ski Valley parking lot below.

Twining Campground is ideal as a base camp for hiking and backpacking, with proximity to trails and amenities. However, campers should be aware of its unique location within a ski resort and the limited number of official campsites.

For inquiries, you can contact the Carson National Forest ranger station at (575) 758-6200 or +1 575-758-6200. When visiting, be prepared for a mix of wilderness camping and ski resort surroundings.

Customers highlight the excellent access to hiking trails and nearby amenities, but also note the unique ski resort location and limited official campsites.

This is one of my favorite camping spots in Taos. There are tons of trails nearby—Twining is an excellent choice for a base camp if you plan on backpacking to Williams Lake or Wheeler Peak. There are also restaurants, bars, and general stores within walking distance. I come here once a year and do not plan on stopping!

This campground is not well advertised, the campsites are above the main parking lot at Taos Ski Valley and to the south of the Bull of the Woods trailhead. It's really convenient if you plan on hiking, but a weird mix of camping with basically being in the middle of a ski resort. The board says four official campsites, but we could only find three. There were multiple other "dispersed" sites nearby. Never had an issue with parking in the TSV lot below.

If you need a place to camp because you are planning to do a summit hike, this would work but I'd rather camp at one of the creekside disbursed camping spots along the road to this campground. It's literally between condos and a parking lots and there are no ammenities. Stacked up against each other with no real privacy. I highly recommend doing the williams lake/wheeler summit hike while here. Incredible views. Super hikes.

Walk in tent camp spots with excellent access to the base area for summer hiking. There is also RV camping spots right below in the parking lot (10 or so buses size RV long semi level paved spots) but they lack any privacy since your in a busy lot with lots of day people exploring the resort. They are also next to where the summer trolly parks, just to note if you are planning on staying for a busy weekend. The tent walk in area is a great option in the summer months to beat the heat with a small stream near by. The tent camp sites can only be accessed by walking in on the trail and are in a grove of aspens with ample shade. Not the best but if you’re bagging a peak this is a great option vs spending $$$ on a hotel. Excellent cell service 2 bars LTE on Verizon.

Nice little spot in the heart of it all. I've camped here 2 times and have enjoyed the experience. Between all the traffic and construction noise, don't expect a peaceful site until after sunset. In other words, 6pm s'mores will be interrupted by diesel exhaust fumes and the beep beep beep of reversing construction vehicles. After dark, it'll be quiet. Note: You'll need to lug your gear straight up (60 degree angle) from the parking lot to get it to your tent site. TSV Police will say something if you unload from the road; I heard another group being yelled at for doing so, even for only a few minutes. I've been assured campers can park in the "No Overnight Parking" lot, and have had 0 issues doing so.
