Great park. Been going there for 30 years! Be aware though, the campground numbers on the reservation map, are not accurate. So be prepared for that. There is a lot of over growth as well, and a lot of Ticks, so bring Permithren.

Arrived expecting views for days, but the mountain was shrouded in fog which still was pretty awesome. The valley floor was 68 degrees and the peak was 48, a twenty degree difference in April. My two kids and I camped in site 5, which had ample space to spread out and have a fire. The drive up Old San Juan make this campground an experience all its own. There were beautiful native wildflowers the whole way up the ridge, carpets of sage and lupine! The facilities were very clean but no maps or park information signage to be found anywhere.

Nice view over Monterey and out to the bay. If you stay here, you have to take the hike up to the peak. Fabulous view of sunset over the Bay. Campsites 5-7 seem to be the best ones.

Great views from above the clouds if you aren’t In the cloud. Stayed here last weekend and was excited by the sunset view we started the evening with. However, that night and the rest of the follow day was living in a cloud. This means that the trees collected the moisture and rained it down on your campsite. Seems like a gamble depending on the weather. Some other things to know: Buy firewood before you leave the nearest town. There’s no place to buy it at the campsite. The bathrooms don’t have running water. This means you don’t want your site to be downwind of the 🚽.
