This isn't just any campground; it's a peaceful retreat nestled on an active Space Force Base, providing an exclusive opportunity to enjoy stunning natural surroundings, convenient amenities, and even the awe-inspiring spectacle of rocket launches. Imagine setting up your RV or tent in a "quiet and peaceful" environment with "lots of green space," knowing that affordable full hook-ups and essential facilities are right at your fingertips. Vandenberg SFB FamCamp is more than just a place to park; it's a strategic base for exploring the rich cultural, natural, and even technological wonders of California's central coast, all while enjoying the camaraderie and security of a military installation.

Vandenberg SFB FamCamp is situated on California Blvd, Lompoc, CA 93437, USA, directly on Vandenberg Space Force Base. Its location on an active military installation means that "You must have the proper credentials for military base access to camp here," a crucial detail for potential visitors. Eligible patrons typically include active duty military, retirees, 100% disabled veterans with a VHIC card, DoD/NAF employees, and their dependents. Access procedures involve presenting a valid military ID or obtaining a visitor pass through the Visitor Control Center, which may require pre-enrollment and sponsorship. Once inside, the FamCamp is conveniently located, with clear signage guiding campers to their sites. The base itself is vast, spanning nearly 100,000 acres, and its unique geographic position on California's central coast makes it ideal for polar orbit launches over the Pacific Ocean. This prime location also offers excellent accessibility to a wealth of nearby attractions. The review notes it's "Close to Lompoc and their flower fields," a stunning seasonal display. Just a short drive away is the historical "La Purisima Mission." Venture slightly north, and you'll find "Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo," offering classic California beach town vibes, renowned surfing, and vibrant cultural scenes. The area is also famous for its "wineries in the area and Edna Valley Wineries on the way to Pismo." This blend of on-base tranquility and off-base exploration makes Vandenberg SFB FamCamp a highly attractive and accessible destination for eligible Californians.

Vandenberg SFB FamCamp offers a comprehensive range of services designed to provide a comfortable and convenient stay for its military-affiliated patrons. These amenities cater to various camping preferences, from full-service RVs to tent camping.

  • Full Hook-up RV Sites: The campground features 49 full hook-up RV spaces, which include 50-amp electricity, fresh water, and sewer connections. These sites are available as both pull-through and back-in options, catering to different RV sizes and preferences. Rates vary for active duty/retirees and retired DoD civilians/contractors, with daily and weekly options.
  • Dry Camping Spaces: For those seeking a more minimalist or short-term stay, there are 20 short-term dry camping spaces. While these do not include hook-ups, they offer a very "inexpensive" option. A recent policy change noted that "Dry camp is now only 10 days out the month," which is an important consideration for longer stays.
  • Tent Camping Sites: The FamCamp also provides 10 dedicated tent camping sites. These sites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for traditional tent camping. Pets are generally not allowed in the tent area.
  • Laundry Facilities: Coin-operated laundry machines are available in two locations (Bldg 5010 and 6005), with multiple washers and dryers, open 24 hours a day for guest use.

  • Recreation Rooms/Lounges: Two lounges (in Bldg 5010 and 6005) offer a comfortable space for relaxation, featuring cable TV, free Wi-Fi access, pool tables, and other games.
  • Pet Friendly: The FamCamp is pet-friendly in RV sites (max 2 pets), although restrictions may apply in the tent area. Pet waste must be cleaned up immediately.
  • On-Site Office/Camp Host: Staff are available for assistance during office hours, and camp hosts provide daily support and ensure policies are followed.
  • Free Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi access is available in the lounge areas, allowing campers to stay connected.

  • Spectacular Rocket Launch Views: Perhaps the most thrilling feature is the opportunity to witness "SpaceX launches a rocket about once a week in 2024" directly from the base. Vandenberg Space Force Base is a major space launch facility, and campers often get front-row seats to these incredible spectacles, providing an unforgettable experience.
  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Campers consistently praise the "so quiet and peaceful" environment. Despite being on an active base, the campground offers a serene escape with "lots of green space," promoting relaxation and tranquility.
  • Convenient and Inexpensive: Reviews highlight that it's "really convenient and inexpensive for all you get." The combination of full hook-ups, clean facilities, and its unique location at an affordable price point makes it an excellent value for military families.
  • Access to Beautiful (Non-Swimming) Beach: While "there is access to a beautiful beach," it's important to note that "you wouldn't want to swim, as there are sharks" and due to snowy plover nesting restrictions. Nonetheless, the beach offers stunning views, opportunities for walks, and a chance to enjoy the coastal environment.
  • Proximity to Central Coast Attractions: The FamCamp serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse offerings of the Central Coast. Nearby attractions include "Lompoc and their flower fields," the historical "La Purisima Mission," and a short drive to popular destinations like "Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo," and the renowned "wineries in the area and Edna Valley Wineries."
  • Modern Amenities: Unlike some rustic campgrounds, FamCamp provides "Full hook-ups, rec room and laundry room," ensuring a comfortable stay with essential conveniences readily available.
  • Spacious Sites: Reviewers appreciate the "roomy" nature of the campsites, allowing for comfortable parking of RVs and trailers, often with ample space between sites.
  • Security and Safety: Being located on a Space Force Base provides an inherent layer of security and a sense of safety, which is a significant draw for many military families.

You must have the proper credentials for military base access to camp here. It's so quiet and peaceful. Lots of green space. Full hook-ups, rec room and laundry room. Although there is access to a beautiful beach, you wouldn't want to swim, as there are sharks. Lots of places to visit nearby. Close to Lompoc and their flower fields as well as La Purisima Mission. Just north is Arroyo Grande, Pismo beach, San Luis Obispo, etc. There are wineries in the area and Edna Valley Wineries on the way to Pismo. SpaceX launches a rocket about once a week in 2024.

Dry camp is now only 10 days out the month. Still $10 but inconvenient if you planned on staying longer. Still I will stop in when I come through because it’s really convenient and inexpensive for all you get and I really appreciate that.

Really nice, long, level sites. People are friendly. It was a Thursday night, so we just drove in and got a spot without a reservation. They also have overflow spots. We wanted to extend our stay through the weekend, but no one was in the office on the weekend. It's a 1/2 hr drive to Solvang and the mission if you want something fun to do. They have a really nice bowling alley on base and a cafe with a delicious chicken sandwich. We plan on going back for another night on the way back home. Watch out for your dog, though. There was a coyote lurking around the campground.

Great campsite with things for the kids to do on location. Base was empty on the 4th of July Weekend and we just passed through on the way to Redwoods. Heads up: The puzzle in the picture is missing a piece which made for a fun exchange with the family 🤣

The fence around the tent area needs to be metal or come down. The drainage needs attention. Whenever it rains, your spots are flooded, and the area is extremely marshy! Could benefit from adding a dog park. The rec rooms are very large and nice with the cool rainy weather they were great when we had family visit. We used the area for visiting and dinner! The guy in the office is not very helpful when you have questions or need help with something. He advised washers, dryers were going to be fixed on a certain day, and they were not. Needed quarters for the machines for 3 days, he kept saying he was going to do a quarter count and refill the change machine..It doesn't take much to do that, other fam camps do it daily! It's a nice place. it just needs a little improvement!
