Viborg Campgrounds Introduce
For South Dakota travelers and RV enthusiasts traversing the southeastern part of the state, the **Viborg Campgrounds** offer a uniquely affordable and convenient option for a brief stopover. Managed by the City of Viborg, this small, self-pay campground is ideal for those seeking an inexpensive, no-frills location with essential utilities. Situated just blocks from Viborg's quaint downtown, it provides immediate access to local businesses and services, making it a practical choice for a quick rest.
This is a small, compact facility, often described by local users as a simple, designated area rather than a sprawling recreational park. It strictly features **three dedicated camping spots** designed to accommodate campers or smaller RVs. The primary draw is its low nightly cost and the utility hookups provided, making it an excellent value proposition compared to commercial campgrounds in the area. While it may lack the expansive amenities of larger state parks like Newton Hills or Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, its practicality for a short stay and proximity to the town’s amenities are its defining features.
The Viborg Campgrounds are centrally located within the small community of Viborg, South Dakota. The city's location in Turner County makes it easily accessible from major highways and serves as a good stopping point between larger population centers like Sioux Falls and Yankton.
The address is:
304 N Peterson St, Viborg, SD 57070, USA
Accessibility is one of the campground’s main advantages:
- Downtown Proximity: The sites are located just blocks away from the main downtown area, allowing campers to easily walk to the local café, grocery store, hardware store, and fuel stations, which is a rare convenience for a budget campground.
 - Quick Stopover: The location is near the highway, making it a suitable spot for a one-night layover while en route to other destinations. However, travelers should note that the proximity to major roads may lead to some noise from passing semi-trucks, as mentioned in local reviews.
 - Site Access: The three sites are stacked, located on a downhill slope with gravel/dirt pads, requiring campers (particularly those with larger units) to back into the spots.

The Viborg Campgrounds operate as a self-registration, basic amenity facility run by the city. It focuses on providing essential hookups for RVs and campers at a remarkably low cost, prioritizing function and value.
Key services and facilities available include:
- Electric Hookups: All three spots offer both **30 amp** and **110 electrical service**, a crucial feature for RV and camper use, preventing the need for generators.
 - Nightly Rate: The cost is extremely budget-friendly at **$10.00 per night** (price subject to change; contact the city for confirmation). Payment is made via self-registration at the sign posted at the campsite.
 - Maximum Stay: Campers are allowed to stay for up to **seven consecutive nights**, making it viable for both short stops and brief stays to explore the area.
 - Site Furniture: Each of the three spots is equipped with a **fire pit** and a **picnic table** for outdoor cooking and dining.
 - Registration: Campers are required to call the **City Hall number** posted on the sign upon arrival to register their stay.

Important Note: It is crucial for campers to be aware that there is **no running water (potable water)** and **no garbage facilities** on site. Additionally, restroom and shower facilities are not available at the campgrounds itself, and no dump station is provided.
The biggest selling points of the Viborg Campgrounds are tied directly to its location and price point, making it a compelling choice for travelers in South Dakota who prioritize affordability and access to local life.
The primary highlights include:
- Unbeatable Price: At just $10.00 per night, it is one of the most cost-effective camping options in the region, offering a dedicated spot with electricity for less than the cost of a typical state park entrance fee.
 - Immediate Downtown Access: Campers can easily walk to local businesses, including a grocery store, café, fuel station, movie theater, and hardware store. This proximity allows visitors to truly experience the friendliness and charm of a small South Dakota town.
 - Access to Local Attractions: The campground is located within easy driving distance of **Swan Lake**, which offers fishing and boating opportunities, and the local **Daneville Heritage Museum**, celebrating Viborg's rich Danish history.
 - Shade: The few trees located at the campsites provide some afternoon shade for sites 1 and 2, a welcome feature during the hot South Dakota summer months.

Cautionary Note: Visitors should be mindful of the few downsides mentioned in local feedback, including the potential for water accumulation during heavy rain (due to the downhill location), the lack of modern restrooms, and the need to watch for dog waste due to locals walking their pets nearby.
Since the campground is a municipal facility, the primary contact for rules, payment information, and registration is the Viborg City Hall.

For South Dakota travelers, the **Viborg Campgrounds** are worth choosing when your travel needs align with two primary goals: **extreme affordability** and **convenient access to local amenities**.
If you are searching for a safe, inexpensive, and functional place to park your RV or camper for one or a few nights, the $10.00 rate with 30-amp electric hookups is virtually unbeatable. It makes a perfect overnight stopping point on a longer journey, providing enough power to run essential appliances without the high cost of a private RV park.
Furthermore, the ability to leave your campsite and quickly walk downtown to grab a meal, restock groceries, or experience the small-town charm of Viborg is a significant benefit. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the friendly, local atmosphere of a South Dakota community, all while keeping your travel budget firmly in check. While it requires accepting the lack of on-site water or modern restrooms, the combination of low cost, electrical hookups, and downtown proximity makes Viborg Campgrounds an excellent, practical, and highly recommended layover spot in Southeastern South Dakota.

Customer Reviews
This makes a good and inexpensive location to stop over for a night on your way elsewhere. There are 3 camping spots located on top of each other, offering, 30 amp and 110 electrical. Each spot has a fire pit and picnic table. It's located on the down side of a hill so if it rains it will all sit on these 3 locations. Pads are gravel dirt and require you to back in. (3 words of warning)The only trees in campground are located at the campsite and they are full of dead wood. The locals walk their dogs there and DON'T pick up the landmines and they are EVERYWHERE. Campground is located across the road from sewer pits. Downtown is located just blocks away. People are very friendly. Cafe, grocery store, fuel, movie theater, hardware store and more. There are no playgrounds on site. You are allowed to stay up to 7 nights. Cost is $10.00 per night. You must call the city hall number posted on sign when you camp.
