Location and Accessibility

Vigilante Campground is strategically located at Highway 280 East, Helena, MT 59601, USA. To access the campground from Helena, you'll travel approximately 16 miles northeast on Highway 280, across the Missouri River, to the small community of York. From York, you'll continue straight on Road #4 (also known as Trout Creek Road) for another 8 miles until you reach the campground at the end of the road. While there's a small section of dirt road, campers consistently note that it's "easy to get to."

Despite the slight dirt road stretch, the path is generally navigable. Easy to get to. Only a little bit of dirt road. But .. make sure you got a spare tire... those rocks are sharp. The area is beautiful. The trout creek trailhead is right there. Walk through a narrow canyon pass... a easy grade hike. Great for kids even. But spectacular for anyone.

We hiked the trail head that's located at Vigilante campground " the trout creek canyon trail". Beautiful trail! 12 miles long, winding, and must be great for mountain bikers too as we saw a lot of them.

One of the better national forest campgrounds in Montana. Many sites are spread out and have tall trees. Extremely quiet due to its location at the end of the road. Trout Creek flows right nearby through its gorgeous namesake canyon. Hanging Valley is a excellent (somewhat strenuous) hike that leaves from the campground to a viewpoint HIGH up on the canyon wall (don't worry, there's a metal fence).

Favorite camping spot around Helena. Stream to cool your feet, rocks for the kids to throw and the most Amazing canyons to walk in with well maintained trails. Taking a stroller is even possible in the beautiful hike. Bring your camera because you will see some Mountain sheep if you keep your eyes up.
