Virgil Point Campground Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Experience Lakeside Serenity at Virgil Point
For Oklahoma residents searching for an authentic and amenity-rich lakeside camping experience in the southeastern part of the state, Virgil Point Campground on Hugo Lake is a highly-rated destination worth your attention. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), this campground provides a well-organized, spacious, and scenic environment that takes full advantage of the beautiful Hugo Lake reservoir. The primary appeal of Virgil Point lies in its picturesque setting—many of the large campsites offer stunning lake views, creating a genuinely tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The facility is designed to accommodate various types of campers, from those with large recreational vehicles (RVs) to traditional tent enthusiasts. It successfully merges the rustic charm of Choctaw County's natural landscape with essential modern conveniences. Guests consistently praise the campground's overall layout and the size of the sites, which provide plenty of "elbow room" and privacy. While the natural operation of a COE-managed area sometimes includes necessary land management practices—such as controlled burns, as noted in a customer review—the underlying quality of the park's facilities, coupled with the incredible recreational access to the lake, makes it a premier choice for outdoor lovers in Oklahoma. It is a genuine Oklahoma gem, focusing on providing direct, enjoyable access to the state's prized water resources.
Location and Accessibility
Virgil Point Campground is ideally situated on the eastern side of Hugo Lake, a major body of water created by the damming of the Kiamichi River. This location places it in the heart of Southeast Oklahoma, a region known for its dense forests, rolling hills, and abundant wildlife.
The campground is located a short drive from the city of Hugo, Oklahoma, providing easy access to local supplies while maintaining a secluded, nature-focused atmosphere.
Address: Hugo Lake Virgil Point Rd, Hugo, OK 74743, USA
Accessibility: As a popular destination managed by the COE, accessibility is a key feature. The roads within the park are generally paved and easily navigated, making it simple for large RVs and trailers to reach their sites. The campground is designed with spacious sites that can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet in length. The area features a variety of loop layouts:
- Loop B Sites: These tend to offer more natural shade, ideal for escaping the summer sun.
 - Loop C Sites: These are more open, often providing unobstructed, sun-filled views of the lake.

The drive to the campground off of US Route 70 is straightforward, making it a viable weekend escape for Oklahomans coming from regional hubs.
Services Offered
Virgil Point Campground is equipped with the core amenities expected of a high-quality COE recreational area, ensuring a comfortable and functional stay.

 - Water Access: Drinking water spigots are available throughout the campground.

Features / Highlights
The features of Virgil Point are centered around embracing the natural environment of Hugo Lake, offering a multitude of recreational opportunities right at your doorstep.
- Unmatched Lake Views: A significant number of the spacious sites boast direct lake views, offering a beautiful backdrop for morning coffee and evening campfires. The campground's layout is specifically designed to maximize these scenic vistas.
 - Direct Water Access: The park provides a dedicated Boat Ramp with ample parking spaces, making it incredibly easy for boaters to launch for fishing, water skiing, and general water sports on the 13,250-acre Hugo Lake.
 - Designated Swimming Beach: For non-boaters, a sandy swimming beach is available within the campground area, providing a safe and designated spot to enjoy the lake's cool waters (note that lifeguards are generally not on duty at COE facilities).
 - Exceptional Fishing Opportunities: Hugo Lake is widely known for its abundant fish populations, particularly crappie, catfish, and bass, making the campground a favorite spot for Oklahoma anglers.
 - Proximity to Hugo Lake State Park: While Virgil Point is a COE-managed facility, it is surrounded by the larger Hugo Lake State Park area, granting campers easy access to the park’s wider network of hiking and nature watching trails.
 - Wildlife Viewing: The heavily wooded and waterside location makes the campground excellent for nature enthusiasts and birders to observe waterfowl, deer, foxes, and other native species in their natural habitat.

What is Worth Choosing: Prime Hugo Lake Access and Spacious Sites
Virgil Point Campground stands out as a top choice for Oklahoma campers because it offers a premium lakeside camping experience at an accessible price point, typical of high-quality COE facilities. The single most compelling reason to choose Virgil Point is its exceptional combination of spacious sites and direct, easy access to Hugo Lake. Whether you drive a large RV or prefer a classic tent setup, you will appreciate the generous site size, which prevents the cramped feeling often found in commercial parks.
Furthermore, the facility is perfectly tailored for the Oklahoman who values water-based recreation. Having a swimming beach and a high-capacity boat ramp available right inside the campground eliminates the need to travel, letting you maximize your time fishing, boating, or simply relaxing by the water.
While a previous controlled burn caused temporary inconvenience and smoke for one reviewer, it is important to recognize this as a routine land management practice conducted by federal agencies to maintain the health and safety of the surrounding forest and prevent wildfires. This proactive management, though disruptive, ultimately preserves the beautiful, forested environment that makes the campground so appealing. For local users, choosing Virgil Point is choosing a well-maintained, professionally managed, and spectacularly scenic base for all your Southeast Oklahoma lake adventures.

First time here, and likely the last. Today they set fire to the camp ground to do a controlled burn. Thanks for the smoke on the first sunny day. Takes a lot of thought to come up with solutions like this.. Oklahoma isn’t o.k. If you are coming to this park in the next few weeks you might think again. Take away the smoke and the facility is great.
Virgil Point Campground is nicely laid out. The sites are large with table, barbecue. And fire ring. Most have lake views. Loop B sites have plenty of shade. C Loop sites are open sites. The boat ramp area has plenty of parking spaces. The restroom/shower facility is very clean. Electric and water available. Dump station is located on the way out of the Campground. The only concern is the vault toilet in the B section needs to be emptied. (Splash back. Not sanitary). I will be visiting Virgil Point Campground again.
We liked the site we chose. Great lake view and shade trees. But, only 30 amp service. Grass was very tall when we arrived, and of course the mowers and weed eaters show up the next morning. We were breaking down and the mowers were zooming around us making it really dusty. I had to wave them down to ask if they would mow away from us for 30 minutes so I can get things put away without making a mistake. BTW...there were only 2 other RV's in the entire park and tons of vacant common space and they decided to mow my site and the other site with a nice new class A motorhome. Oh! We gave 3 of the workers cold bottle water when they were using the weed eaters. It was extremely hot.
Stayed here during off-season at Christmas time. Stayed in the southern campground – C. Extremely reasonable for seniors and senior passholders. Worth checking it out.
Stayed a week at B section has grass pads. Liked section C and D best because paved pads and good views. Restroom near front gate was clean. Campsite was large. Sign for turn into park was broke off. Grass was tall but mowers came couple days later.
