Introduction / Overview: Your Gateway to the Pineywoods Wilderness
For Texans seeking a genuine escape into the wild, the Walnut Ridge Unit of Martin Dies Jr. State Park stands out as a premier destination. Situated deep within the East Texas Pineywoods, this campground offers more than just a place to pitch a tent; it provides a comprehensive nature experience where the Angelina and Neches Rivers converge on the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir. Known for its serene waterways, towering cypress trees, and abundant wildlife, the park is a beloved spot for outdoor enthusiasts from across the state. The Walnut Ridge Unit, in particular, offers a variety of accommodations and easy access to some of the park's best water and land-based activities. It’s a place where you can trade the city skyline for a canopy of ancient trees and the noise of traffic for the gentle sounds of the sloughs.
Martin Dies Jr. State Park, encompassing approximately 705 acres, provides a vital habitat for a diverse array of wildlife and plants, making every visit a fresh opportunity for nature study and exploration. Whether you're an avid angler, a seasoned paddler, or a family looking for a memorable weekend getaway, the Walnut Ridge Unit is perfectly positioned to deliver a quintessential Texas outdoor adventure.
Location and Accessibility: Easily Reachable East Texas Charm
The Walnut Ridge Unit is a key component of Martin Dies Jr. State Park, strategically located in the heart of the East Texas forest country. Its address places it conveniently off a major roadway, making it a manageable drive from many population centers in Texas.
The park sits between the charming towns of Woodville and Jasper, often referred to as the "Jewel of the Forest." This location ensures that while you are deep in the wilderness, essential supplies, groceries, and local dining options are never too far away—a perfect balance of isolation and accessibility. The unit is specifically situated on the northern half of the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, where the water access and views are unparalleled.
Accessibility is straightforward via US Hwy 190 W, Jasper, TX 75951, USA. As a note to all travelers, while the location is well-marked and on a major highway, remember you are entering a natural environment. It’s wise to check the latest Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) alerts for the park before your trip, especially concerning water levels or any localized closures within the various units of the park.

What is Worth Choosing: A True Texas Wilderness Experience
Choosing the Walnut Ridge Unit is choosing to immerse yourself in one of Texas's most biologically rich and beautiful regions. It is more than just a campground—it's a launchpad for deep woods adventure, aquatic exploration, and pure relaxation.
For many Texas travelers, the appeal is the seamless blend of comfort and rugged nature. You can stay in a comfortable, screened shelter and still be only steps away from launching a kayak into a fog-laden slough. As one customer noted, the convenience of the screened shelters means there is “no need to mess with a tent,” making the transition to the outdoors incredibly easy. The park’s location on the reservoir means that lakefront sites are frequently available, offering peaceful, restorative views that are “great place to relax and fish.”
It is crucial to note that this is a true wilderness area, a factor that enhances the experience but requires respect and awareness. The presence of "wild animals in this location," including alligators and, rarely, mountain lions, is a testament to the park’s natural integrity. While encounters like the one described by a reviewer—where large wildlife was sighted—are uncommon, they are a powerful reminder that visitors are guests in the animals' home. Responsible camping, securing food, and observing all park guidelines, especially regarding wildlife safety, are essential for a safe and rewarding trip.
In summary, the Walnut Ridge Unit is worth choosing for its prime location on the water, the variety of campsites and shelters, the exceptional paddling and fishing opportunities, and the unforgettable experience of the legendary Texas Pineywoods. It’s an authentic taste of Texas wilderness with all the necessary amenities to ensure your focus stays on the natural beauty that surrounds you.
We highly recommend reserving your site in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your spot in this East Texas gem.

Customer Reviews
Great place to relax and fish. Screened shelters to stay in, so there is no need to mess with a tent.
A good place for anyone who is tired from driving long hours, just be aware that there are wild animals in this location. My friend and I were traveling from Texas to Georgia and needed a place to sleep, we arrived around 11pm and been driving for more than 12 hours, it must have been about 3am when our vehicle was surrounded by two mountain lions walking around the vehicle while we slept, my friend was the first to notice them since he slept with his window fully opened and got startled by a low growl on his window spooking the mountain lion looking straight at him through his open window… after that we were fully awake and aware of the situation and decided to continue driving to the nearest town away from the woods.
Love the park, but a large church group of tent campers made us feel like we were camped in the middle of a playground. I love kids, but these were off the hook. Yelling and screaming and running a mock while the adults we’re playing volley ball until after 10:00 at night, right next door to us! No consideration or respect. It was so loud it was miserable. There should be rules to ensure all campers are able to enjoy the camp site they paid for.
Amazing place, lots of good spots and they offer 50 AMP hook ups.
Very nice deep woods large trees and fishing, trails and canoeing, special activity daily hook up with electric power and water, and dumping stations located within the park. Very expanse area.
