I would recommend anyone passing through windigo spend a night at this campground! In 3 days we saw 12 moose all from our campsite. They like the hang out and eat down by campsite 1 and 2, but if you stay vigilant, it’s hard to stay here and not see a moose! The creek is nice to cool off in and the campground has composting toilet privys (with no toilet paper). It is about a .5 mile walk to the main windigo area where you can get hot food, access the store, shower and use real flush toilets!
Great first campsite in Isle Royale! Running water and a 0.3 mile hike from the dock. If you’re lucky you might see a moose bathing in the river running along side the campsites. There’s bathrooms near the dock and outhouses at the campsites which don’t have toilet paper. The sunsets are also incredible.
Busy campground in August with all shelters taken. Interior sites are social with lots of people passing by which is great at the start or end of your trip. Picnic tables are a luxury but watch out for opportunistic foxes who steal your stuff! We lost some silicone cups this way.
I did not camp here, but visited the campground and spoke with a number of campers who camped here. The setting is stunning, as the harbor area is just gorgeous. According to the campers, there were moose everywhere in the evening. I wished we had camped here. Very close to the Windigo dock if you are shipping out, as well as the store and visitor's center.
Plenty of campsites along the creek with many shelters to choose from.lots of moose activity, especially in the evening and early morning. Definitely a welcome respite after backpacking the length of the island.
