A nice quiet campground. Some secluded spots, some open field spots. Bathrooms were great with clean hot showers and was basins for dishes. Camping here allows you to use your pass for parking in town at the gorge visitor center which was nice.
Spacious, pretty private spots. Beautiful park, with wide but steep dog-walking trails along the gorge winding through a forest of oaks, pines and birches. And then there’s the impressive stone path through the gorge itself. No wonder tourists have flocked to this space since the late 19th century. The park is close to the vibrant town of Watkins Glen.
The campgrounds itself are great. Bathroom facilities are up to par except the shower pressure was weak. Both men’s and women’s bathroom have a wash sink for dishes. Pool playground, and other facilities are great. Not to mention the gorge itself, which is fantastic. My only complaint is that my campsite itself was terrible. We were at site 166. There was no level area at all in the campground. There was also no path leading to the bathroom on our side so many people used our campsite to walk to the bathrooms. They should close down our campsite and just let it be a path to the bathrooms. We just guessed wrong when booking our site. The other sites looked good.
More open vs having privacy with your neighboring camper, then we are used but we weren't really there during the day so it didn't bother us. Bathroom where well maintained and so we're the sites. Rangers were also super friendly!
Our campsite was huge! it was close to the restrooms and showers, so I was a little worried about being disturbed at night. I was not at all! The nights were the quietest I've ever heard the forest with so many people in it. The campground was full, but we barely noticed our neighbors because there is still a bit of forest between each campsite. The bathrooms and showers were clean and bright, and well maintained. I will definitely be camping here again!
We stayed two nights at the Onondaga campsite and unfortunately found the bathroom facilities to be very disappointing. From Friday-Sunday morning, it didn’t appear that the bathrooms were cleaned at all. Of the two shower stalls, one was broken and running continuously. The first night, the water was ice cold. Maintenance did come by the next day and, while they weren’t able to fix the continuously running broken shower, they were thankfully able to restore hot water for the remaining time of our stay. Being located right across the road from the bathrooms, we expected easy access-but there’s no direct path between campsites, so we had to walk most of the road to get there. It ended up being a 7-10 minute walk for what would have been a 30-second trip. I would strongly suggest adding a footpath or cut-through for easier access to the restrooms. That said, the best part of the site was its direct access to the Gorge Trail. The hiking opportunities were absolutely beautiful and a real highlight of our stay!
Watkins Glen itself is a very neat place but very busy, be mindful of the crowds while hiking. The campground was nice. Like anywhere the spot you choose matters. Some loops where nicer then others. Overall, I loved the variety of sites here. Some large, some small. Some flat, some very hilly with 10-15 height differences. Overall a good stay. Like most places, depends on your neighbors.
