Customer Reviews
I think it's a standard state park. Only stayed on night. Small beach, some sites with hook ups, some great sites right on the st Lawrence. Good playground, marina, cabins, and cottages. I guess it might have more than average for state park. It was also somehow very quite. Campground was almost 100% booked and no one was at the beach. Cooler but still nice summer day. 15 or kids at the playground. Not sure where everyone was.
We enjoyed our stay at Wellesley Island State Park. We had a nice electric only campsite (C23) which had a good mix of shade and sun. We also used the clean laundry room to wash a load of clothes which was much needed for our two week journey. Many of the campsites are 20/30A electric only. The water spigots were located very far from the road, making it difficult to fill the water tanks on your RV without pulling far into the grass. I seems that since most of the campers are camping there in RVs they could remedy this by making the campsites more RV friendly. We met a older couple that had been going there for two weeks every year for the last 51 years to the same campsite. I really enjoyed kayaking amongst all the small islands in the area. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a 27' Motorhome.
Eagle loop site 64 was great. We had wonderful views and felt alone because we weren’t jammed next to others. One of the best maintained State Parks we’ve visiting. Bugs were not bad at all for us. We used a screened in tent, did wonders. There’s a place that sells an entire wheelbarrow of wood for $30 to the right before you enter the park. Ended up leaving half of it because plenty of other people offered the wood they left. Commuting to Alexandria Bay was super easy and fun driving over the bridge. We visited their community thrift shop bc we needed a pot and heavy blanket, was $5. There’s a gas station with alcohol before you get onto south 81 because they don’t sell any at the park. Overall, we would go back again, but maybe try to get a site on the water for our dogs if it’s not booked already. Book ahead!
We usually never stay in traditional campgrounds, always opting for free stuff in the forests, boat launches, etc. Well this place was worth the reasonable cost! We scored such a fantastic site, I cannot believe someone else did not snag it. Lots of families out there with their large RVs, kids running around and having fun, but we did not mind it. All that noise calmed down around 9pm. Slept great, took a morning dip in the river. We will definitely be back some day! We had such a fantastic view of the sunset from our hammock at our site.
We typically camp in the ADK so my thoughts here include comparisons between the two. We liked that we didn’t have to worry about bears though we did see many raccoons. The river water was clear and we had access from our waterfront site on Loop A. There is significantly more boat activity than on ADK lakes so it’s not as peaceful. However, it was still a lot of fun. We did get a little cell service compared to none in the ADK. The drive up 81 is super easy and accessible for central NYers. I didn’t see any political flags at camp sites which was refreshing in this day and age. Our site was in Loop A, and there is a nice, clean modern bathhouse near sites 53-67 which is not on reserve america’s map online. As a whole the park has a lot to offer- nature center, beach, arcade, store, laundry. 👍👍 Also the playgrounds were very modern and it’s a great park for bikes, scooters and roller blades.
