West Poplar River Camp Introduce
For Minnesotans who measure their weekend success by the miles hiked and the quiet of the forest, the **West Poplar River Camp** offers a uniquely challenging and rewarding overnight stay on the celebrated **Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)**. Located near the scenic town of Lutsen, this backcountry campsite is integrated into one of the most rugged and beautiful segments of the SHT—the section that frequently ascends and descends the Sawtooth Mountains, offering stunning inland and Lake Superior vistas.
This is a designated, rustic site, part of a network of over 90 free, first-come, first-served campsites established to support section and thru-hikers. It requires total self-sufficiency, meaning campers must pack in all food and gear and adhere to strict 'Leave No Trace' principles. What makes the West Poplar River Camp a favorite is its specific environment: positioned near the flowing Poplar River, it offers a distinct atmosphere compared to the open-ridge campsites.
User feedback gives a clear picture of this campsite’s character: it is known for its **"fantastic water source"** and its **"angled terrain."** This means while ground sleepers may find the sloped tent pads less ideal, hammock campers will find it a paradise, with **"Plenty of trees"** that make it **"great for hammocks."** It is a classic North Shore trail experience, where the slight inconvenience of uneven ground is overwhelmingly compensated by the soothing sound of the **"gurgling Poplar River"** and the natural beauty of the boreal forest setting.
Location and Accessibility
West Poplar River Camp is a hike-in-only location on the Superior Hiking Trail, situated in the wilderness near **Lutsen, MN 55612, USA**. Lutsen serves as a key access point and hub for this portion of the trail, offering amenities and shuttle services to hikers.
- Access Method: The camp is **strictly hike-in via the SHT** footpath. No vehicles are permitted directly at the campsite.
 - Nearest Trailheads: Hikers typically access this area from trailheads along the Caribou Trail (County Road 4) near White Sky Rock or the Lutsen Mountains Ski Hill Road parking lot. For instance, the East Poplar River Campsites (a nearby point of reference) can be reached by hiking approximately 1.9 miles northeast from the Lutsen Ski Hill Road SHT Trailhead.
 - Trail Context: The trail segment leading to and past the camp **runs directly between the river and the campsite area**, providing easy access to the water source. This section of the SHT is characterized by rugged, demanding terrain typical of the Sawtooth Mountains.
 - Distance: The hike to West Poplar River Camp involves varying distances depending on the chosen entry point. Since it is located well within the backpacking segment between Tofte and Grand Marais, a multi-mile trek over challenging terrain is always required.
 - Navigation: Hikers must rely on the **blue blazes** of the SHT and detailed maps or the official SHT Guidebook for navigation, as signage within the campsite itself is minimal.

Services Offered (SHT Backcountry Standard)
The services at West Poplar River Camp are simple and focused on environmental protection, adhering to the standard model for all Superior Hiking Trail designated campsites. The philosophy is to provide minimal necessary infrastructure.
- Designated Tent Pads: The camp features **multiple cleared areas (tent pads)** for pitching tents. Customer reviews confirm the terrain here can be **"somewhat inclined"** or **"sloped,"** a common feature in the rugged SHT environment.
 - Backcountry Latrine: An **open-air, non-flush latrine**, or 'thunderbox,' is provided. This is situated away from the main camp area and water source for sanitary purposes, essential for maintaining the clean ecology of the river and woods.
 - Community Fire Ring: A single, **centralized steel fire ring or grate** is available for campfires. Hikers are expected to share this facility, use established benches or logs, and gather only dead and downed wood.
 - Water Source Access: A significant advantage is the proximity and reliability of the **Poplar River**. This "fantastic water source" is easily accessible, though all water must be **filtered, purified, or boiled** before consumption.
 - No Trash Service: No garbage disposal is provided. All waste, including food scraps and wrappers, must be **packed out** by the hiker.

Customer Reviews
Fantastic water source makes up for the angled terrain of camp. Plenty of trees makes it great for hammocks, but the sloped tent pads is less ideal for ground sleepers.
This is a good site located above the gurgling Poplar River. The trail runs between the river and the campsite. I do remember the tent pads being somewhat inclined, but it didn't cause me any problems.
Good location, but there are only a couple areas to set up tents, and the site is mostly slanted. Still a lovely area.
Not real flat. But, chill and close to the river.
