Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery Introduce
Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery, situated in Twining, Michigan, serves as a prominent destination within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, particularly for those seeking a rustic yet accommodating outdoor experience. This family-owned and operated establishment blends traditional camping with convenient access to river adventures, making it a versatile choice for individuals, families, and groups exploring the natural beauty of Northern Michigan. Open year-round with power available, Whispering Pines strives to provide a peaceful and enjoyable retreat for all its guests.
The environment surrounding Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery is characterized by its tranquil and natural setting in Northern Michigan, specifically near Twining, which is approximately 6 miles from Au Gres, 9 miles from Standish, and 30 miles from Tawas. The area features relatively flat terrain, offering a mix of wooded and open spaces that provide a traditional camping ambiance. The "Whispering Pines" in its name aptly describes the presence of abundant pine trees, contributing to a shaded and serene atmosphere that many campers seek.
Crucially, the campground is located near two significant waterways: the Rifle River and the Au Gres River. This proximity allows for direct and easy access to these rivers, which are central to the recreational offerings of the campground. The surrounding region benefits from being close to the Rifle River Recreation Area and the vast Huron National Forest, opening up thousands of acres of public land for exploration. This means guests can enjoy extended hiking trails, observe diverse wildlife, and immerse themselves in the undisturbed natural habitats of Michigan. The seasonal temperature variations, ranging from approximately 20°F in winter to 80°F in summer, allow the campground to cater to various outdoor activities throughout the year, from warm-weather paddling to cooler-weather hiking and relaxation.
Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery offers a range of services designed to make both camping and river excursions seamless and enjoyable.
- Campsites: The campground features 21 RV sites, primarily offering electric-only hookups (15/30/50 amp service). These sites are spacious, typically 25 feet wide by 60 feet long, and include pull-through options, making them "big rig friendly." Each campsite is equipped with a personal fire ring, encouraging the classic campfire experience. For those who prefer tent camping, designated tent sites are also available, often at a lower rate.
- Cabin Rentals: For guests seeking more comfort, Whispering Pines offers fully furnished cabins. These cabins come equipped with bed linens, blankets, a Smart TV with streaming capability, a private restroom with a shower and towels (though guests are advised to bring their own beach towels for outdoor use), a stove/oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and basic cooking utensils. Cabins vary in size, with some offering one bedroom (full-size bed) and a sofa bed for up to 4-5 persons, while larger duplex cabins with two bedrooms and additional sleeping arrangements can accommodate up to 7 persons. Outside, cabins include an outdoor grill and a fire pit.
- Canoe Livery Services: As a full-service canoe livery, Whispering Pines provides access to the Rifle River for canoeing and kayaking. They offer rental canoes and kayaks, with the added convenience of spotting and pickup services for boats, both for guests and potentially for non-guests (for a fee). The typical river trips offered on the Rifle River range from 2 to 4 hours, catering to different preferences for duration. Importantly, the use of canoes and kayaks is often free and exclusive to their guests, available on a first-come, first-served basis, enhancing the value for campers.
- Essential Supplies: The campground offers a selection of essential supplies, including LP (propane) tanks in various sizes, ice, and firewood. Firewood is available for purchase in bundles or larger bins (delivered to your site), with an emphasis on using local wood to prevent pest issues.
- Dump Station: A dump station is available on-site, free for registered guests, and accessible to the public for a fee.
- Restroom Facilities: While specific details on showers are not always consistent, the campground provides men's and women's outhouses (pit toilets), maintaining a more rustic feel for some sections.
Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery boasts a range of features that contribute to a comprehensive outdoor experience, making it an attractive choice for campers in the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category.
- River Access: Direct or very close access to the Rifle River is a major draw, enabling guests to enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and potentially tubing. The scenic and relatively gentle nature of the river makes it suitable for leisure activities.
-
Outdoor Recreation: Beyond the river, the campground offers various on-site and nearby activities:
- Playground: A "huge awesome playground" provides entertainment for children, ensuring family-friendly fun.
- Sports: Horseshoe pits and potentially other open areas for games are available.
- Hiking Trails: Walking and hiking trails are accessible from the campground, allowing guests to explore the natural surroundings. The proximity to Rifle River Recreation Area and Huron National Forest significantly expands hiking opportunities.
- Community Spaces: The campground may feature common areas such as an event center or chapel, which can be reserved for private events but are otherwise available for registered guests during certain hours, fostering a sense of community. A large community fire pit may also be available near common lodge areas.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: Well-behaved pets are welcome (typically with a two-pet limit per reservation), provided they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them. This makes it an inclusive destination for pet owners.
- Quiet Atmosphere: The campground emphasizes a peaceful environment, with quiet hours typically observed from 10 PM to 8 AM, and requests for low music/noise to ensure a relaxing stay for all.
- Year-Round Operation: The fact that the campground is "Open all year with power" provides flexibility for visitors, allowing them to enjoy the area across different seasons.
Whispering Pines Campground & Canoe Livery promotes itself as a rustic campground with convenient access to state and national parks, ideal for an excellent camping and canoeing experience. Its location on M-65 near US Highway 23 positions it strategically for visitors traveling through Michigan's "Sunrise Side."
Reservations are accepted, often requiring an ID upon arrival, and cannot typically be made for someone else without prior arrangement with the office. Check-in is at 3 PM, and check-out is at 11 AM. The cancellation policy for camping reservations generally allows for a full refund if cancelled up to 7 days prior to arrival. For retreats, special events, or whole campground rentals, a full refund may be offered if cancelled within 60 days, and a 50% refund within 30 days.
Pricing for RV and campsite rentals varies, with daily rates typically ranging from $14.00 to $20.00, and an additional fee for air conditioner/heater usage on electric sites. Cabin rental prices vary by season (summer vs. fall) and size, with a minimum 3-night stay often required on holiday weekends. Discounts, such as 15% off for cabin rentals of 6 nights or longer, or 10% off for additional visits within the calendar year, may be offered (only one discount applies per visit). Passport America discounts are also honored for RV sites, typically offering 50% off the daily rate for a maximum of two weeks. However, these discounts usually do not apply to canoe livery services or cabin rentals.
Visitors are reminded of various policies, including no alcohol or smoking on the property, a limit of one vehicle per site (with additional parking available), no outside golf carts, and strict rules regarding pet behavior and waste. Visitors of registered guests must check in at the office and depart by 10 PM quiet hours. These rules are in place to maintain the peaceful environment and ensure a pleasant stay for all.

Customer Reviews
Camped here in a cabin 7 years ago and it was great only thing is,there was no place to shower. It had very clean outhouses daily maintained but the only source of water was a well in the ground and you had to heat it in the microwave with your own container.$45 back in '17 and $5 wood bundles plus a nice gas station service with delicious homemade deli pizzas customized. It came with a forepit, bbq and picnic table Very hospitalable owners and even propane to use the installed heater by the door plus chairs and a microwave.I really loved camping there with my bf and miss it so
The campground is clean, small, and a perfect place to relax from the house is you're just loosing your mind inside during Corona! It may be a bit cold to camp, but the experience is what you make it! I love camping year round and honestly, this one I genuinely really like. A lot of my friends go and camp here for a nice chill time. Not always quiet, but everyone's usually having fun!
We found this little gem of a place by accident. The owners are so kind and accommodating, we several times every year.
I've tried calling dozens of times and never received and answer.
