The property's natural charm, with the river weaving through it, is consistently highlighted as a major draw. While it caters to campers, it also appears to serve a community of long-term residents. This dual nature can create a distinct atmosphere, and some local users have offered candid feedback on how this influences the overall camping experience. Our goal is to provide a balanced and factual overview, acknowledging both the undeniable beauty and the areas where the campground might be evolving. If you're looking for a beautiful natural setting with plenty of space to roam and engage in outdoor activities, White Oak River Campground certainly has elements that will appeal to you.

White Oak River Campground is located at 7660 New Bern Hwy, Maysville, NC 28555, USA. This address places it in Eastern North Carolina, nestled within the rural landscape of Maysville. For many North Carolinians, particularly those in the eastern and central regions of the state, accessing Maysville is a straightforward drive via major highways, including US-17.

The campground's direct adjacency to New Bern Highway (US-17) means it is highly accessible, though this also implies some proximity to road noise. As noted by some visitors, if you see its location on a map, you should anticipate traffic sounds, which can often be mitigated by white noise or a fan. Despite the highway presence, the property itself is quite expansive, with the White Oak River weaving through it, creating a sense of natural immersion once inside the grounds. The internal roads are generally maintained for ease of access for RVs and vehicles. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring other nearby attractions in Eastern North Carolina, such as the Crystal Coast beaches, Jacksonville, and New Bern, which offer additional dining, shopping, and historical sites.

White Oak River Campground offers a range of services designed to accommodate various camping preferences, from short-term stays to long-term residents.

  • RV Sites: Provides well-equipped campsites with essential amenities such as water, sewer, and electric hookups (full hookup sites) for RVs and trailers.
  • Tent Camping: While primarily geared towards RVs, tent camping is also accommodated, allowing traditional campers to enjoy the property.
  • Bathhouses: Functional bathhouses with showers and toilets are available for guest use. (Note: Recent reviews indicate these are functional and generally without odor, but may be run down, lack airflow, and have minor maintenance issues like broken locks or drainage problems.)

White Oak River Campground boasts several unique features and highlights that draw visitors, alongside some areas noted for potential improvement based on recent feedback.

  • Gorgeous Property and River Access: The undeniable highlight is the stunning natural property, with the White Oak River weaving through it. This provides beautiful scenery and opportunities for walking, fishing, and possibly paddling.
  • Large Disc Golf Course: A significant draw for many, the campground features a huge and well-maintained disc golf course, offering an excellent recreational activity right on site.
  • Friendly Long-Term Residents: Many visitors have reported meeting "very nice folks" among the long-term residents, contributing to a sense of community.
  • Peaceful Ambiance (with caveats): While next to a highway, many campers find the overall atmosphere peaceful, especially if they use ambient noise to mask traffic sounds. The spaciousness of the campground helps.
  • Responsive Owner: The owner is noted for being willing to "take care of locals" and for maintaining the large amount of land.
  • Fishing Opportunities: The presence of ponds provides good fishing experiences for families and enthusiasts.
  • Potential for Day Use: Given its amenities, the property has strong potential for day-use activities like disc golf, paddle rentals, and fishing, even if not staying overnight.
  • Concerns Regarding Maintenance and Resident Behavior: It is important to note critical feedback, including observations of cigarette butts littering river areas, the start of a feral cat colony, numerous unaltered dogs, and general "slumlord vibes" from some areas not related to transient sites. Bathhouse maintenance, while functional, has been described as rundown with poor ventilation and lacking proper locks on doors.
  • Pet Policy: While pets are allowed, the presence of numerous unaltered dogs among residents could be a deterrent for some campers bringing their own pets.

I'll start by saying the property is gorgeous with the White Oak River weaving through it. I could walk it all day everyday. I met a few of the long term residents, and they are very nice folks. Could say a little quirky, but hey, I am too. That being said, the property has an obscene amount of potential being lost in how it's run. They do a great job maintaining the amount of land they have, but it sorta seems that's where it ends. Some resident behavioral issues need to be addressed, or the owners need to call it what it is, a rv trailer park, not so much a campground. Cigarette butts are all over the field next to the river at the campground. There is the start to a feral cat colony in the works. Let that get out of control, and they'll never get a repeat temp customer again. The amount of unaltered dogs living there will be a deterrent to any camper wanting to bring their dogs. The bathhouses are functional with no odor. They are run down with no airflow, but I have low standards for bathhouses. That being said, the female residents clearly can't be bothered to remove their hair, and one of the showers was filling up with water while I used it. The other had no lock on the door. No lock on one of the toilets either. I understand there's a lot of maintenance to be done just on the land, but the bathhouse shouldn't be ignored. I'm not saying paint the thing every week, but installing sturdier locks and clearing screens, so you can open the hatches for air are jobs that really aren't too much to ask. If the owners want to ignore these issues, maybe they should just operate a day service for paddle rentals, disc golf, and fishing use away from the park itself. I'd love to return as a camper and not a day use, but only if it starts operating more like a campground and less like a trailer park. I'm happy the owner is willing to take care of locals no matter what led to them living in RVs. But living in a RV doesn't mean you have to be trashy. Take pride in the gorgeous property you own. I'm giving it four stars simply because the property is stunning and the people are nice. But really... clean up the act a little, so it doesn't give slumlord vibes. Also, yes, it's right next to a highway. If people see that on a map, book it, and then act shocked that there is road noise, well I don't know what to tell them. I cut my fan to run continuous on my ac unit, and the traffic noise just mixed with it. Slept like a baby.

Thank you, John for your amazing hospitality! My husband and I spent a week tenting in a perfect spot by the river. Bathrooms/showers were clean, well- stocked and freshly painted. Fire rings and picnic table were in great shape. Thanks for delivering the firewood right to our site. We thought the permanent campers were very friendly and had great stories to share about the local area. The table tennis was fun, and the nature walk was very scenic. Next time, we hope to bring our fishing poles. We didnโ€™t encounter any noise issues during our stay. We even had a nice visit with the friendly geese each morning! I even captured some cool photographs of the night sky It was relaxing, and we would not hesitate to stay again!

The White Oak River Campground sits on a beautiful piece of property and houses my all time favorite disc golf course. 36 diverse holes that are fun for all skill levels. There are also several great fishing holes around the property with kayaks and canoes available for rent. This is a fun, family friendly environment with plenty of activities for the young and old! I can't think of any place I'd rather spend my money or time.
