White Sand Campground Introduce
Idaho, with its vast national forests, wild rivers, and rugged mountains, offers an unparalleled escape into nature. For locals seeking a truly peaceful and scenic camping experience, away from the crowds and bustling amenities of more developed sites, White Sand Campground near Lolo, Idaho, is a hidden treasure. Nestled within the expansive Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, this Forest Service campground provides a rustic yet immensely rewarding retreat for those looking to reconnect with the wild heart of Idaho.
White Sand Campground is renowned for its quiet charm and natural beauty. As one satisfied camper aptly put it, "If you like out-of-the-way, small, quiet campgrounds, this is the place for you." This description perfectly encapsulates the essence of White Sand, which prioritizes tranquility and a genuine connection to the outdoors. Situated on the Brushy Fork of the Lochsa River, the scenic beauty is undeniable, offering picturesque views and the soothing sounds of flowing water.
A key aspect of White Sand Campground, as highlighted by experienced RVers, is its surprising capacity for larger rigs despite initial conservative estimates from official sources. One review noted, "The website showed the max RV as 30' but I always believe the rangers are conservative on their estimates." This camper successfully fit a 38' trailer in Site 1 and a 42' rig in Site 2, demonstrating that with careful planning, larger vehicles can indeed find comfortable spots. The sites are described with impressive detail, including specific lengths: "Site 1 will take a 38' trailer or motorhome... Site 2... will fit a 42'... Site 4 will take a 35' RV... Site 5 will take a 30' trailer... Site 7 will take a 35' RV." The presence of "plenty of room to park your tow vehicle" and "good tent sites" alongside RV spots indicates a versatile campground welcoming diverse campers.
Furthermore, several sites are "Satellite friendly," a valuable feature for RVers who rely on satellite connectivity. While the campground offers a more primitive experience with "pit toilet and one water spigot," these are deemed "quite adequate" for the type of camping provided. The mention of its close proximity to the "historic Lewis and Clark Trail and not far west of Lolo Pass" adds a layer of historical significance and offers additional exploration opportunities. For Idahoans seeking a tranquil, scenic, and genuinely wild camping experience, White Sand Campground offers a perfect, out-of-the-way haven.
White Sand Campground is located on Powell Rd, Lolo, ID 43035, USA. It's important to clarify that while the address may list Lolo, ID, this campground is specifically situated within the Idaho portion of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, on the western side of the Lolo Pass. This places it approximately 59 miles southwest of Missoula, Montana, and east of Lowell, Idaho, along the scenic US Highway 12, also known as the Lewis and Clark Trail Scenic Byway.
To reach White Sand Campground, travelers typically turn off US Highway 12 at approximately mile marker 164 onto Elk Summit Road #111. The campground is located about one mile down this well-maintained gravel road. While the road leading into the campground itself is described as "unpaved" and "tight," indicating a need for careful navigation, it is generally passable for RVs of various sizes, as evidenced by user reviews.
The strategic location of White Sand Campground offers a balance of seclusion and accessibility to key natural and historical landmarks. Its position near the historic Lewis and Clark Trail provides excellent opportunities for exploring the region's rich past, while its proximity to the Lochsa River and White Sand Pond ensures ample water-based recreation. Being a Forest Service campground, it integrates seamlessly into the natural environment, providing an authentic Idaho wilderness experience that is still within reach for local adventurers.
Campsites: White Sand Campground consists of one loop with seven individual campsites suitable for both tents and RVs. Each site generally includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate. The sites are notably "spaced well" with natural buffers providing privacy.
RV Accommodation: Despite official conservative estimates, individual reviews confirm that various sites can accommodate larger RVs and trailers. For example, Site 1 can fit a 38' RV, Site 2 a 42' RV, Site 4 a 35' RV, Site 5 a 30' trailer, Site 6 can accommodate a 60' deep RV, and Site 7 a 35' RV. Most sites also offer plenty of space for tow vehicles.
Tent-Specific Sites: Site 3 is highlighted as a "great tent only spot" located "ON the river," with parking for two vehicles nearby.
Restroom Facilities: The campground provides at least one "pit toilet" (vault toilet), which is described as "quite adequate" and presumably well-maintained for a rustic setting.
Water Access: There is "one water spigot" available for potable water. However, some reviews indicate that water availability can be inconsistent (e.g., "disabled well" in older reviews), so campers should come prepared with their own water or purification methods as a backup.
No Hook-ups: As a rustic Forest Service campground, White Sand does not offer electrical, water (at individual sites), or sewer hook-ups. Campers should be self-contained.
Garbage Services: Public information indicates that garbage services are available within the campground, likely via designated dumpsters.
First-Come, First-Served: Generally, White Sand Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are typically not accepted. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
Secluded and Quiet Atmosphere: The primary highlight of White Sand Campground is its tranquil and "out-of-the-way" setting. It's ideal for those seeking a "small, quiet" escape from bustling environments, offering ample privacy between sites.
Lochsa River Proximity: The campground is located on the Brushy Fork of the Lochsa River (a major tributary to the Clearwater River). While direct river access from some sites is noted (e.g., Site 3), the general area provides opportunities for river-related activities. The Lochsa River is renowned for its fishing (steelhead, salmon, trout) and whitewater opportunities in spring.
White Sand Pond: Adjacent to the campground is White Sand Pond, which is a popular spot for fishing and picnicking. Idaho Fish and Game reportedly stocks the pond with trout annually.
Lewis and Clark Trail Access: White Sand Campground is located close to the historic Lewis and Clark Trail, offering excellent opportunities for hiking and backpacking along this significant route.
Scenic Beauty: Nestled underneath a stand of mixed conifers and shrubs in a forested area with open meadows scattered about, the campground offers a very scenic backdrop for outdoor activities and relaxation. The surrounding area is also known for superb berry-picking opportunities.
RV Adaptability: Despite its rustic nature, the campground's ability to accommodate a range of RV sizes, including larger fifth wheels and motorhomes (up to 42'), is a significant advantage, particularly for a Forest Service site. The "Satellite friendly" nature of several sites is also a valuable perk for RVers.
Wildlife Viewing: The area is known for abundant wildlife. Reviewers mentioned moose and other wildlife often visiting nearby Powell Campground, suggesting similar opportunities at White Sand. It's an excellent location for nature observation and photography.
Proximity to Lolo Pass: Being not far west of Lolo Pass (on the Idaho-Montana border), campers have easy access to the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, which offers exhibits and additional trail access.

We RV in a 37' 5 th wheel sho I'm cautious about forest service CG's. The website showed the max RV as 30' but I always believe the rangers are conservative on their estimates. Other CG's west of here had max RV of 40' but I decided to take a look here. Site 1 will take a 38' trailer or motorhome with plenty of room to park your tow vehicle. Plus several good tent sites. It's also Satellite friendly. Site 2 is the one we're took and it will fit a 42'.. had tow vehicle parking and tent sites is also SAT friendly.. but the trees are getting big... Site 3 is a great tent only spot with parking for 2 vehicles only. The site is 30 ft from the parking and is ON the river. The nite we were there there was a couple in a cab over pickup camper. Site 4 wil take a 35' RV but is narrow. Site 5 will take a 30' trailer and has nice large tent areas. Site 6 is really deep... like 60 ft.. good tent areas and is SAT friendly. Site 7 wil take a 35' RV.. good tent sites.. is SAT friendly.
If you like out-of-the way, small, quiet campgrounds, this is the place for you. Located on the Brushy Fork of the Lacsha River, it is a very scenic spot, close to the historic Lewis and Clark Trail and not far west of Lolo Pass. It was perfect for a one-night road trip stay. The unpaved road in the campground is tight and the sites are small, so I do not recommend this for bigger RVs. The pit toilet and one water spigot is quite adequate.
We stumbled on this campground by luck when the campground we had chosen was unexpectedly closed. This little campground is right by a river, which was raging loud because it was spring. Lots of big shady trees, decent sized campsites with plenty of good tent spots. Nice hiking trail along a high ridge that follows part of the Lewis and Clark trail. One very clean vault toilet, no running water. No cell service. Just a great place to get away from it all!
Nice camp grounds, spaces are kinda of close, there's public restrooms. Great views! Only down sides, close to your neighbors, and the fishing pond is used for the fires. So the helicopter is over head often getting water.
Small campground with on river sites. Quiet. Beautiful free stone river. Large campsites with large metal fire rings. Sites include picnic tables.
