My favorite place to visit! The gypsum sand is always cool so walking barefoot is the way to go. You can hike as far as you would like in any direction, sled down the hills or just lay down and enjoy the peace and beauty. Plan to spend a couple to several hours here. Bring a picnic lunch and relax. The gift shop sells sleds if you need one, it may be cheaper to buy one at the hardware store before visiting. Be sure to watch the short video about the dunes at the visitor center before you enter.
Beautiful place! Good vibes and looks different depending on the time of day, all amazing! Make sure to hydrate and have layers, it’s warm to very hot during the day and cools off quickly with sunset. Go sledding and enjoy some trails, barefoot is the way to go in the sand! I visited in late October and throughout November. Picnic on the dunes for sunset, carry in carry out, be respectful and enjoy the awesomeness to others & of the park!
Oh my God, worth a visit. A geological wonder. You can do it in a day. It is not a large national park. Some minor and intermediate hikes. I recommend including the sunset walk with a ranger interpretative guide. The ranger will educate you on the geology of how the white sands formed and insight into botanical and animal life of the park. I will leave the option of sledding up to you. It is not like on snow. Much slower and the dunes are not that tall. Seemed okay for small children. I did not sled.
This was an absolutely amazing experience. We loved the fact you could walk anywhere on the dunes. Make sure that you know your position at all times though. It could be very easy to get lost there! They have marked trails or you can choose your own adventure. Coming from Canada and escaping the snow, this was a cool surprise to find out you can sled down the dunes like a snow hill. Highly recommend.
TL;DR: White Sands National Park is an unforgettable experience with stunning dune landscapes, fun sledding opportunities, and a unique drive through endless white sands. White Sands National Park is easily one of the coolest places I’ve visited recently. The drive through the park is surreal—being completely surrounded by nothing but vast, shimmering white gypsum sands is awe-inspiring. Climbing the dunes is a bit more challenging than it looks, but the views from the top make it absolutely worth the effort. While I didn’t sled myself, it was fun to watch so many people enjoying it. I visited on a perfect January day in the 60s, which added to the experience. Highly recommend a visit to this incredible park!
