Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For those of us lucky enough to call Montana home, there’s nothing quite like a well-situated campground that offers both convenience and a genuine connection to our stunning natural surroundings. Whitefish Campground, nestled within Whitefish Lake State Park, is precisely that kind of place. It’s a perennial favorite for locals, offering a welcoming atmosphere and direct access to the beautiful Whitefish Lake, all within easy reach of the vibrant town of Whitefish.
This campground isn't just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it’s a community hub where friendly staff make you feel right at home, and the natural beauty of the Flathead Valley takes center stage. As one local reviewer highlighted, "Again, I found the staff to be exceptionally helpful and kind. Restrooms are basic and adequate for camping, campsites and beach area are clean and comfortable." This speaks volumes about the experience here—it’s well-maintained, welcoming, and focuses on the core joys of camping. While the lake might be shallow and silty for swimming at this specific spot, the ease of renting a kayak or launching your personal boat opens up a world of water-based fun. Plus, with "well-behaved dogs welcome," it's the perfect spot for the whole family, including our four-legged companions.
Whitefish Campground is ideally located at 1615 W Lakeshore Dr, Whitefish, MT 59937, USA. This places it directly on the shores of Whitefish Lake, just a stone's throw from the charming and bustling town of Whitefish. Its position offers the best of both worlds: a peaceful lakeside retreat with easy access to town amenities, dining, and shopping.
Getting to Whitefish Campground is straightforward. From the heart of Whitefish, you'll simply follow West Lakeshore Drive. The paved roads lead directly to the park entrance, making it easily accessible for all types of vehicles, from passenger cars to RVs. The campground is part of Whitefish Lake State Park, a well-maintained Montana State Park, ensuring clear signage and well-kept internal roads. While it offers a serene setting, it's worth noting that the park is situated near active train tracks, a common feature in many Montana towns due to the state's rail history. However, as one reviewer pointed out, "Though the trains did come through during the night, it is easy to sleep through and did not bother us one bit," suggesting it's a minor inconvenience that most campers adjust to quickly. This excellent accessibility, combined with its prime lakeside location, makes it a top choice for locals looking for a quick and easy getaway to the water.

We appreciate parks that are well-maintained by friendly staff, where basic amenities are clean and functional, and where the focus remains on the natural experience. Whitefish Campground embodies the accessible, family-friendly outdoor experience that we Montanans value. It’s a place where memories are made, deer roam freely, and the spirit of the Flathead Valley truly comes alive, making it a perfect spot for any local looking for their next lakeside adventure.

This is my 2nd time staying here. Again, I found the staff to be exceptionally helpful and kind. Restrooms are basic and adequate for camping, campsites and beach area are clean and comfortable. The lake at this location is very silty and shallow, so swimming is a little challenging, but it is very easy to rent a kayak from the beach, or even take a personal boat out. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here.
Park was clean and the views were great. Stayed here with my wife and had a great time. A lot of deer through the night. Though the trains did come through during the night, it is easy to sleep through and did not bother us one bit. Even paying non resident fees, I would happily pay them again to be able to help maintain the park and be able to enjoy the space. Park ranger stopped by and was extremely friendly and answered questions we had about the area. My advice if you are looking to stay here or any park in the state, grow a pair and dont be a cry baby about minor inconveniences. If you can't handle a little hardship while camping in a designated lot then maybe you should stay close to your starbucks.
DO NOT MISS THE TURN! Our trailer was stuck in the closeby neighborhood. There is absolutely no way to turn around. We nearly needed a crane to get us out of that neighborhood. 27 foot trailer. That neighborhood should be gated or something to prevent people from getting stuck down there. The residents said there was a big sign but we did not see any signs. Even when we finally got out of there we did not see a sign. There is a sign that says "no outlet" and that's all we saw.
Men's showers could be repainted or retiled. Looking old. Trains go by all night, but no horns.
Beautiful camp ground. Only real complaint is the train that went thru all night. Got no sleep.
