Small shelter located 1.2 miles off the trail - not a super flat 1.2 miles either. Remember - what goes down must also come back up. There are some very pretty overlooks on the way to the shelter, which are very nice to sit at as you catch your breath to get back on the trail. There is a privy, fire pit and bear cables. Water source was a bit of a walk - probably .25 (guestimate) but was like a tapped Spring with good power when we were there. Another raised shelter - expect some wind, so lay something under you on those colder days.

Checked out the shelter but didn’t stay. Looked nice but it’s a 1.2 mile hike off the trail. We opted to pitch a tent before the actual shelter because we’d had a long, hard hike that day & we’re ready to call it a day.

Short 3 mile hike there and back. Water at the end near the AT shelter. Great rock ridge view opposite cowrock mountain and easier hike.

The trail around Whitley Gap is pretty, though not something that’s totally exciting in comparison to other trails. There is a small spring head about a quarter mile below the shelter. Shelter is in good condition with lines to hang food up high, a bathroom area, etc. biggest negative is getting to it - the grade is 40% once you cross the peak and get close to the shelter. It’s a bear if you’re slap worn out...both getting up and down. I wouldn’t call it hard, but it is moderately difficult. Not good for kids or feeble. Good if you’re looking for a new trail and want a short 3-miler.

Has Verizon one bar. Good water. Clean and less frequented than the other shelters.
