Widgeon Creek Campground Introduce
Widgeon Creek Campground offers a unique camping experience for local users seeking a wilderness getaway accessible by water. Located near Coquitlam, BC (address: Quarry Rd, Coquitlam, BC V0N 3Z0, Canada), this campground within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category requires a paddle to reach, as there is no road access for the general public.
The journey to the campground begins at Grand Narrows, across the mouth of Pitt Lake, where you launch your canoe, kayak, or paddleboard for a scenic paddle up Widgeon Creek. It's important to be aware of boat traffic on Pitt Lake, as some boaters have been observed traveling at unsafe speeds and acting irresponsibly towards paddlers.
Navigating to Widgeon Creek involves bearing right into Widgeon Slough after entering it, and then staying left at every fork in the creek. Timing your paddle with the tide is crucial. Approaching within two hours of low tide may result in numerous shallow spots where you will need to walk your gear upstream. It is strongly recommended to plan your trip to coincide with high tide for an easier paddle.
Upon arrival at the campsite, be prepared for potential crowds, especially during sunny weekends and long weekends. One visitor counted nearly 100 canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards at the site during the day on a long weekend. However, by dusk, the area becomes much less crowded, offering a more tranquil camping environment.
The campground itself is described as a "nice little campsite" equipped with essential facilities for a wilderness experience. For bear safety, there are nine food cages provided, and for sanitation, there are two outhouses available. Please note that there are no other facilities such as garbage collection or recycling. It is absolutely mandatory to pack out all of your garbage to maintain the pristine environment of the area.
Fishing in late August has been reported as yielding no results. The primary focus of Widgeon Creek Campground is on the paddling and wilderness camping experience.
Remember the ethos of this natural area: "Take nothing but pictures & leave nothing but footprints." Be responsible and ensure you pack out every bit of waste you bring in. The mandatory use of the provided bear-proof storage areas is crucial for the safety of both campers and wildlife. Due to its popularity with paddlers, especially on sunny weekends, the importance of packing out all garbage cannot be overstated.
Widgeon Creek Campground offers a unique opportunity for local users to immerse themselves in nature through a paddle-in adventure. Be prepared for the journey, respect the environment by packing out all waste, and utilize the provided bear safety measures for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Beautiful little paddle up the Widgeon Creek. You launch at Grand Narrows across the mouth of Pitt Lake. Be careful for boaters, most are going recklessly fast. We watched one intentionally swamp a couple of canoes and race off laughing. Once you get into Widgeon Slough bear right into Widgeon Creek. Then stay left at every fork. If you go within 2 hours of low tide you will have a lot of spots you will need to walk your gear upstream. Strongly recommend going close to high tide. Once at the site, it was crowded during the day on a long weekend (we counted almost 100 canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards). By dusk, it was much less crowded and a nice little campsite with 9 food cages for bear safety and two outhouses. There is no road access unless you are a park ranger. Fishing in late August yielded nothing.
Take nothing but pictures & leave nothing but footprints. Pack out all garbage. I'll say it again - there is no garbage collection, facility, recycling, nothing! Pack out your garbage! Use of the provided bear-proof storage areas is mandatory for safety. This place is riddled with SUPs, kayaks, canoes & people especially on sunny weekends; hence, another reminder to pack out your garbage.
Nice area accessible by kayak/ canoe/ paddleboard. The water was quite shallow at several points so I don't know if you could paddle in year-round. The tent platforms are handy to make sure you don't wake up in a puddle or muddy mess. Clean facilities and well maintained campsite. The bear proof food lockers are great.
Excellent backcountry campground accessible via kayak / Canoe/ SUP from Grant Narrows boat launch on Pitt Lake. Bear lockers, 2 pit toilets, and a fair number (12?) of campsites along the shoreline and in the forest. As this is a backcountry site users will need a method to treat their own water from the creek for drinking as well as a camping stove. There are NO CAMPFIRES permitted in this area. The campground is heavily used by daytrippers between 10am and 6pm and a 45 minute hike from the campground leads to Widgeon Falls. During the early morning/ late evening Widgeon Creek is a truly special place. If you are going to visit ensure you follow the "Leave No Trace" ethic and PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT!
Awesome landscape, some very shallow areas at some points. I had to walk my kayak briefly, and that’s was supposed to be highish tides.
