Wingate Campground Introduce

As a premier offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Wingate Campground provides an exceptional outdoor experience, uniquely positioned within Dead Horse Point State Park near the adventure hub of Moab, Utah. This campground is celebrated for its breathtaking environment, comprehensive services, diverse features, and its strong connection to the surrounding natural wonders. This detailed introduction aims to provide local users with an objective and thorough overview, drawing information directly from available public resources.

The environment of Wingate Campground is truly spectacular and is its most compelling draw. Perched atop a mesa at an elevation of approximately 5,913 feet (around 1,800 meters), the campground offers unparalleled, panoramic views of the sculpted pinnacles and buttes of Canyonlands National Park and the winding goosenecks of the Colorado River, situated 2,000 feet below. The surrounding landscape is classic high-desert terrain, characterized by a mix of juniper and piñon pine trees that provide partial shade and a distinctive aroma. The open sky above is a significant feature, as Dead Horse Point State Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2016. This means light pollution is minimal, providing campers with extraordinary opportunities for stargazing, where the Milky Way is often vividly visible. The geological formations, including the famous Dead Horse Point overlook, are central to the visual experience, creating a dramatic backdrop for every campsite. While the desert environment can lead to hot daytime temperatures, especially in summer, the elevation often brings cooler nights, and conditions can vary significantly by season. Visitors should be prepared for sun exposure, wind, and the arid climate.

Wingate Campground offers a range of services designed to make camping comfortable and accessible, moving beyond a primitive experience. For RVers and those seeking more amenities, 20 of its 31 campsites are equipped with electrical hookups (20/30/50 amp service), accommodating rigs up to 56 feet in length. For traditional tent campers, there are 11 dedicated hike-in tent-only sites. These sites, while requiring a short walk (less than 200 yards) from the parking area, offer a greater sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. Additionally, Wingate Campground provides a unique glamping option with several yurts available for rent. These yurts come furnished with bunk beds (typically a queen on the bottom and a full on top), a futon, air conditioning/heating units, lamps, and outdoor amenities like picnic tables, BBQ grills, and fire pits. All campsites, whether RV, tent, or yurt, include a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate, often complemented by a shade shelter to offer respite from the desert sun. Crucially, the campground features modern amenities such as flush toilets and restrooms with running water, along with dishwashing sinks. An RV dump station is available at the entrance for waste management. It is important to note that while potable water is available for general use, there are no facilities for filling RV water tanks directly at the campground, and all water is trucked in from Moab, so conservation is encouraged. Firewood is not available for collection within the park but can be purchased at the Visitor Center or Entrance Station. Each site has a maximum occupancy of eight people and allows one vehicle to park directly at the site, with extra vehicle parking available near restrooms for an additional fee.

The features of Wingate Campground extend beyond its direct amenities, offering a gateway to a wealth of outdoor activities. The campground's strategic location within Dead Horse Point State Park provides immediate access to an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails. The park boasts 17 miles of singletrack biking trails, including parts of the popular Intrepid Trail System, catering to various skill levels. Hikers can explore a variety of rim trails offering stunning overlooks, and other paths that lead to unique geological formations. Photography is a major draw, with the iconic Dead Horse Point Overlook being one of the most photographed scenic vistas globally, particularly at sunrise and sunset. The park's commitment to being a Dark Sky Park means night sky photography and naked-eye stargazing are unparalleled features. Wildlife viewing is also popular, with opportunities to spot desert flora and fauna. The proximity to Moab, approximately 32 miles away, allows campers easy access to additional recreational opportunities such as rafting on the Colorado River, canyoneering, four-wheeling, and visiting the renowned Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. A Visitor Center within the park offers exhibits on the area's geology, history, and biology, as well as a small cafe (Dark Horse Cafe) for snacks and beverages. The campground is also pet-friendly, allowing leashed pets on campsites and most hiking trails, making it an inclusive destination for travelers with companions.

Promotional information for Wingate Campground often emphasizes its unique blend of accessibility and dramatic wilderness. It is promoted as a year-round destination, though specific hike-in tent sites may close from December to mid-February due to winter conditions. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons (spring and fall), as the campground is frequently booked solid. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance via ReserveAmerica or by calling the park. While walk-up sites may occasionally be available, securing a reservation is advisable. Fees are clearly communicated, with RV campsites typically around $50.00 per night, hike-in tent-only sites at $40.00 per night, and yurts at $150.00 per night. These fees include the park entrance fee for one vehicle, with an additional charge for extra vehicles. The park regularly reminds visitors of its conservation efforts, particularly regarding water, which is trucked in, and emphasizes "Leave No Trace" principles to preserve the pristine environment. The tranquility, stunning vistas, and direct access to both active adventures and serene stargazing make Wingate Campground a highly sought-after destination for those exploring the iconic landscapes of Southeast Utah, offering a premium experience within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category.

Wingate is a great place to camp. Electric hookups but not water or sewer. They do have a dump station onsite with non-potable water.

Nice campground located in Dead Horse Point State Park. Staff is friendly and helpful. The grounds and bathrooms are spotless. Electric at site and dump station on the property. Water for cleaning dishes, showers and drinking is only available at the restrooms. Water is scarce in this desert environment. I would highly recommend this facility to big rigs, tent camping or rental of their clean, air conditioned yurts.

Excellent campsite for one night, after spending the day in Canyonlands and the state park. Bathrooms were clean and heated, and campground was quiet. Hiking trails leading to the canyon rim directly from the campground were a huge bonus, and something we took advantage of for the afternoon of our stay. Ice cream for sale at the Visitor’s Center was also great!

Beautiful, clean campground and tent camping spots with views of the mountains and the Colorado river. We stayed at Wingate for a week and will definitely be back. Our campsite was a walk in spot #36 in Wingate. Our spot was well maintained and had a nice sun shelter with a picnic table to beat the heat and shield from the wind during the day/night. The bathrooms had running water with a sink and a flush toilet and a dishwashing sink nearby. The closest bathroom to us at our walk in spot was a pit toilet, but the flushable toilet was a very short walk to get to. The visitors center also had wifi if needed since there is no service in or near the park and it had lot of food, firewood and ice available as well as wonderful views and shady spots to enjoy a snack or lunch. Wingate campground also had the West rim trail offshoot located right from the campground and we were able to take the trail and enjoy amazing sunsets in complete solitude. Overall, an amazing experience and nicely maintained campground and park with friendly staff. We will definitely camp here again. It's so close to arches and canyonlands it's a central location to visit the parks in Utah. The only negative is that they don't have showers and the nearest showering facility to the campground is in Moab, but they are very upfront about that when booking and we knew this ahead of time, you just need to plan ahead. Also, our spot was very windy due to its location near the gorge, but when the winds weren't very high the view and are camping spot was pretty unbeatable.

Stayed 2 nights in site 50 in April in an RV. The views of the la sal mountains were fabulous, maybe the best in the campground. Really nice individual restrooms with flush toilets and warm water in sinks. Dish washing station for tenters. Hiking and mountain biking trails right from campground. Visitor center super close too. Dump station but no fresh water refills for RVs. Sites have electric. Top notch campground. Will absolutely come back.
