We stayed here hiking the Appalachian Trail. It was a good shelter. There's plenty of water nearby. There's a bear box and a privy. It holds about 8 people.
This place is a shelter on the Appalachian Trail. It is a medium-sized shelter with space for about 8. A pooling spring is reported about a hundred yards in front of the shelter - you’ll see the horse poop nearby to let you know your close OR you can go to the stream about .2 before you get there NOBO. Camping in Grayson Highlands State Park is limited to designated sites, of which Wise Shelter is the only one. Camping is allowed in the shelter only. No camping around the shelter! A new moldering privy is located behind the shelter. The older pit privy is also located nearby, so two privies.
Lots of space for many campers here. Always has been night 1 stay when we come. Water, toilet and shelter are near.
Good shelter. Water up the trail, from stream, near tent camping area. The composting privy is quite excellent, blueberries all over in July when we were through. Ponies wander through with zero notice of hikers.
Has a bear box, picnic table and probably 20 camping rings in close proximity. It also has multiple water sources nearby (some B4 and some after) that were flowing this weekend even though almost all the other water sources on the trail were dry.
