Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
Montanans know that the best escapes are often the ones tucked away from the crowds, and the Wood Lake Campground is a perfect example of this beloved secret. Situated deep within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest on the iconic Rocky Mountain Front, this small Forest Service campground offers a pristine, unhurried atmosphere for those seeking true outdoor immersion.
At an elevation of approximately 5,500 feet, Wood Lake Campground is defined by its beautiful surroundings: a high-elevation lake cradled by deep woods of mature fir and lodgepole pine. It's an ideal setting for a few quiet days of relaxation, fishing, and connecting with the rugged Montana landscape. Campers who have visited describe it as a “beautiful uncrowded campground” with a tranquil, well-laid-out design. If you appreciate simple, rustic amenities and stunning natural beauty over crowded resort-style camping, Wood Lake is a destination tailor-made for your next adventure.
Wood Lake Campground is located near Augusta, MT 59410, USA, positioning it strategically along the Lewis and Clark National Forest's western boundary. The campground is situated approximately 24 to 26 miles west of Augusta via the Benchmark Road (Forest Road 235).
As is common for these secluded mountain locations, the drive-in experience is part of the adventure. The access road—shared with the larger Benchmark Campground—involves a significant stretch of a dirt (gravel) road. Customer feedback notes that the drive can be "a little bumpy," which is typical for Forest Service roads on the Rocky Mountain Front. However, the campground accommodates various vehicle types. The maximum recommended trailer length for the area is 35 feet, and the campsites are nicely dispersed, with ample space for recreational vehicles and tow vehicles, provided they are self-contained. The scenic drive rewards visitors with increasingly gorgeous views leading up to the lake.
Wood Lake Campground embraces a simple, clean, and back-to-nature approach to camping, focusing on essential facilities to keep the area accessible while preserving the delicate mountain environment. It’s an excellent spot for self-contained RVs, pop-ups, and tent campers who prefer a more dispersed, natural setting.
The unique features of Wood Lake Campground are centered around the high mountain lake itself and the extensive trail system that radiates out into the greater National Forest.
Wood Lake Campground is managed by the USDA Forest Service, Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. For up-to-date seasonal opening dates, fee structures, and current road conditions, it is best to contact the local Ranger District.

Wood Lake Campground is the perfect destination for the Montana local seeking genuine tranquility and unpressured recreation. If your idea of a perfect weekend involves a quiet morning of trout fishing on a glass-smooth lake where no motorboats are allowed, followed by an afternoon hike through the scenic woods, this is the place. It’s worth choosing for its seclusion and small size, which guarantees a truly uncrowded experience, even during the peak summer months. The consistently clean vault toilets and newly built picnic tables demonstrate that while the amenities are rustic, the campground is well-cared-for. For self-contained campers and tent users wanting to experience the heart of the Rocky Mountain Front's beauty without the crowds often found at major trailheads, Wood Lake Campground offers an unparalleled, peaceful escape.

Beautiful uncrowded campgound. We stayed here for 3 nights during the second week of August 2020. Nicely dispersed campsites, clean vault toilets. Nice big newly built picnic tables. nice standard firerings. Overall very clean and well laid out. Wood lake had good fishing; many people were pulling out 10 to 12 inch trout. A great place to spend a few quite days on the Rocky Mountain Front.
Beautiful scenery into sight. Vault toilet cleaned monthly, 10$ per night. No sights on lake but still gorgeous views and trout fishing. Only drawback is drive in is a little bumpy
Very peaceful. And doesn't cost an arm and a leg to stay there.
beautiful lake there called wood lake great fishing and there a little creek before the lake cool looking falls called ford falls
Clean looking CG. Across from a rarely good sized pond with picnic tables and restrooms. There is also a trailhead that starts in the CG.
