For Minnesotans and all lovers of the Northwoods, the **Woodenfrog Campground and Day Use Area** offers a classic, rustic camping experience nestled in the vast **Kabetogama State Forest**—serving as a primary gateway to **Voyageurs National Park (VNP)**. Located near the serene community of Kabetogama, this site provides a necessary middle ground between highly developed resorts and the deep wilderness of the nearby BWCAW. It is managed with a "primitive" ethos, furnishing only the basic needs of the camper, allowing nature to be the true star of the show.
Woodenfrog is known for its **spacious sites carved into the dense forest**, providing a high degree of natural privacy. Visitors consistently praise the **location**—it's right on the shores of Lake Kabetogama, providing easy access to one of the four major lakes of VNP. As one camper noted, the location's proximity to VNP is a major **"plus."** The campground operates primarily on a **first-come, first-served basis**, reflecting a trust in the camping community. Daily rates are very affordable (around $17 per night, though rates should always be confirmed).
The experience here is hands-on and self-directed. Visitors report a relaxed, unsupervised atmosphere—**"We never saw a ranger or any staff."** Check-out time is suggested to be late, often 4 PM, allowing for maximum enjoyment of the day. While the sites offer seclusion, prospective campers should be aware that the terrain is rustic; sites may be **"primarily dirt"** and **"not very level,"** as observed by past guests. Furthermore, communal responsibility is essential, as some travelers have experienced issues with the lack of leash control on dogs from large groups. Overall, however, Woodenfrog is universally valued for its quiet, woodsy charm and its strategic position for water-based adventures.

We camped at Woodenfrog in August 2025. We found the campground to be 1/2 empty when we arrived on a Thursday mid morning All of the lake view and larger sites were occupied. We camped it site 18. The campground did fill up throughout the day and into the night. There is no set check in time and check out time is suggested to be 4 pm. We never saw a ranger or any staff. Our site was primarily dirt with some shade. We had a large group near us that allowed their dogs to roam the campground constantly. The location to Voyagers National Park was the plus. There is a nice beach close by on Lake Kabetogama.
Camp sites are pretty distant. Basically carved into the forest. Fire pit and picnic table at each site. Camp host was helpful and nice. Sites are about a mile from the boat launch. Plenty of parking near launch.
We didn't stay at the hotel or the campground. We used the boat landing to be able to access the water and get to a nearby island. The landing is very nice, it's used by many people. There is a restroom there for use as well and if you walk to the opposite side of the landing you can also access the water and there's a nice grassy area. We've used this landing multiple times. Very convenient!!
Wooden frog is peaceful and so beautiful. We stayed mid October. They don’t take reservations. It’s first come first serve, but 6 of the available 61 drive in sites were available. They turn off water at the beginning of October, but it not a big issue as they have pit toilets that were clean enough. We loved this campground and would return!
Nice park, views are okay. Boats dock nearby or launch from the ramp next to the park.
