While some recent feedback has highlighted operational challenges, it's important to present a balanced view, acknowledging both the established benefits and areas that may require attention for current and future visitors. Understanding the specific nature of a military Famcamp is key to appreciating its value and planning a successful visit.
It's important to clarify that military Famcamps operate under specific regulations and access requirements. Wright-Patterson AFB Famcamp is not open to the general public. This exclusivity contributes to its security and often provides a quieter, more controlled environment for its users. Reviews indicate that the base itself is "huge" and offers a wide array of services that campers can potentially access, adding significant value to a stay at the Famcamp. While recent reviews mention some operational issues such as a lack of an on-site host, potentially leading to disorganization and maintenance concerns, earlier feedback consistently praised the Famcamp for being "probably the best military Famcamp we've been to," highlighting its quiet and safe environment. This suggests a facility with strong fundamental offerings that, when properly managed, provides a top-tier experience for its intended audience. Our aim is to give you, the Ohio local, the full picture so you can make an informed decision for your next camping trip.
The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Famcamp is strategically located at Building 4057, Area, A St, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433, USA. Nestled within the expansive Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, it offers the convenience of being on-base, providing direct access to a multitude of base services and amenities. For Ohio residents, particularly those in the Dayton metropolitan area and surrounding regions, its location is highly accessible. The base itself is a significant landmark in Greene and Montgomery counties, making it relatively easy to navigate to via major roadways.
However, accessibility to the Famcamp is contingent upon eligibility for base access. This means that only active duty military, retired military, DoD civilians, DoD contractors, and their dependents with a valid DD Form 1173 (or equivalent) are permitted to enter. Visitors must ensure they have the proper identification and understand the specific gate access procedures, as these can vary. Some reviews note that specific gates might be closed at certain times, requiring alternative routes through the main gate. It's always advisable for Ohioans planning a visit to verify gate hours and entry requirements in advance by contacting the base's security forces or the Famcamp directly. Once on base, the Famcamp is situated adjacent to Bass Lake, offering a pleasant natural setting despite being within a military installation. Customer Reviews
The place is a mess since they have no host anymore on site! People are parking where ever! Some parking and not paying! People parking cars on the grass! Total chaos with no host to keep things running smoothly! And the grounds look horrible due to the new crew must have never mowed in their life! Didn’t even finish the grounds just left it half mowed! Who knows what the bathrooms look like!! A host has to be on site 24/7 to keep a campground running properly!
Located in Dayton, OH. Probably the best military Famcamp we've been to. Quiet (except for reveille at 7:30 a.m. weekdays) and safe. Huge base with all you need here. Nice dog park. Highly recommend if you are active duty or retired military.
One of the lower-end FamCamps we've stayed at in our three years of travel so far. Service from Outdoor Rec is nearly non-existent. Getting a hold of anyone to make reservations was a chore in itself. Phone call after phone call goes unanswered during business hours, and voicemails are returned a week later, if at all. No Camp Host on site or any after hours number so if you arrive outside of the M-F 12-5pm business hours and need anything you are on your own! Upkeep of the grounds is minimal. And be prepared that it is way out of the way for anything - 10 minutes to BX/Commissary and 15 minutes just to get off base.
We were Traveling through from New York and booked to stay here. At Gate guard ID us and you feel welcomed. The location for RV was clean with park bench, propane hook up (must ask), electric hook up, water hook up, and dog park close by. Rest rooms are available although didn't use any other features at this camp. We arrived at night and had the peace of safety as we traveled. Highly recommend and the planes on location are amazing. Would stay again.
We went there for the fishing. It was so peaceful! A couple of nibbles but not one catch. That's fine because it was so serene the fish were just part of the trip.
