Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp Introduce
For many Californians, the Sierra Nevada Mountains represent the pinnacle of outdoor adventure. With their towering peaks, pristine lakes, and vast wilderness, they offer an escape unlike any other. However, for a special segment of outdoor enthusiasts, the ideal mountain getaway involves not just hiking boots and a backpack, but also the companionship of horses or pack stock. Imagine waking up to the crisp mountain air, saddling up your horse, and exploring breathtaking vistas directly from your campsite. Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp, nestled near Lower Forni, CA, is designed precisely for these adventurers. It offers a unique and dedicated space for those who wish to experience the High Sierra from horseback, providing essential amenities in a stunning natural setting. For local residents who share a passion for equestrian pursuits in the wilderness, this camp is a truly specialized and inviting destination.
California's diverse landscape means a wide array of camping opportunities, from coastal bluffs to desert expanses. Within the Sierra Nevada, traditional campgrounds cater to hikers and RVers, but dedicated equestrian camps offer a distinct experience. These specialized sites understand the unique needs of horse owners, providing space for trailers, corrals (where available), and direct access to trails suitable for riding. While the allure of the High Sierra is undeniable, the practicality of bringing horses means that specific, well-equipped locations are essential. Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp fits this niche perfectly. It's a place where "anyone traveling with equestrian or pack stock animals is allowed," and while some trails might be challenging, the stunning vistas, vibrant wildflowers, and abundant birdlife make every ride and hike a memorable one. For Californians who dream of exploring the mountains on horseback, this camp provides the gateway to that quintessential Sierra adventure.
Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp is located at RQR7+QW, Lower Forni, CA 95720, USA. This address places it deep within the stunning High Sierra region of California, offering a truly immersive mountain experience. Lower Forni is typically associated with the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, often near or within national forests like the Eldorado National Forest, which is a prime area for outdoor recreation.
Access to Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp generally involves traveling on Wrights Lake Road. Reviewers confirm that "Wrights Lake Road is a viable option" for vehicles, even for "a three horse goose neck and full sized pickup." This is crucial information for equestrian campers, as large rigs require adequate road conditions. While viable, mountain roads can always present challenges, and drivers should be prepared for winding paths and varying surfaces. The camp's location provides excellent accessibility for Californians seeking a genuine mountain experience without venturing into extremely remote or inaccessible terrain. It offers a balance of deep immersion in nature while still being reachable for trailers carrying horses. Its proximity to the beautiful Wrights Lake itself is a significant advantage, providing scenic beauty and potential for non-equestrian activities as well. Visitors should always check road conditions, especially during shoulder seasons, as high Sierra roads can be subject to closures due to snow or weather. The journey to this camp is part of the adventure, leading you into a landscape renowned for its natural splendor.

Customer Reviews
The campground itself is clean and the outhouses serviced daily. In the summer Wrights Lake Road is a viable option and we managed fine with a three horse goose neck and full sized pickup. Each camp site has a nice picnic table, fire ring and large bear proof locker for food storage. Some sites may prove challenging for modest sized rigs. Water is present but has a low flow. This would have been a five star review, but the horse trails are limited, and the footing on most of them is mostly bad, with a lot of rock (boulders, gravel, cobbles, and long expanses of shelf rock) and many steps up and down, some quite large and narrow.
Anyone travelling with equestrian or pack stock animals is allowed here. The area is well known for its vistas, hiking, wildflowers and birds.
