It's great and it's usually all to yourself. Dogs have plenty of room to run around. Get your morning hike on and see that massive panoramic view.
Pulled over here to capture come astrophotography. Plenty of space for parking and equipment, no special vehicle needed for the parking area. Great spot to park and stargaze. Both times I have visited this location at night, there were high winds, once in March and the other in July. Not sure if this is common here, but be warned, this might not be the best location to set up chairs outside.
This is much more of a day hike place than a campground. Although it is perfectly fine as a place to park your RV overnight, it is right by the S3 highway, and isn't anything more than a poorly paved parking lot (just old) although well protected from any rare heavy rain runoff/flooding by a little flood control berm. There is no pit toilet, and I would definitely not count it as a good place for car camping or tent camping. Probably best only as an easy place to pull off and sleep! The overlook trail is nice, and there are a lot of nice draws and a steam on the other side of the highway to explore. 5 stars as a place for a day hike!!! A better free place to camp is the Yaqui Well Primitive campground at the bottom of the hill by the Tamarisk Grove campground. Tamarisk is developed with paid sites, water and showers. Yaqui Well Primitive campground is right next to Tamarisk, where you can get off the road, quite far actually, although down a variably maintained dirt road. So you can avoid road noise and light compared to Yaqui Pass! Much nicer.
Stayed here after not arriving early enough for a FCFS campsite but had a better time here because the other site was crowded and noisy. We had the entire camp to ourselves and it was fun. This is just a big empty dirt lot with a hiking trail. Signs say campfire permitted. No bathrooms. Great site for a short stay.
What a beautiful place to visit as me and my friend camped out to no one maintained. We slept underneath the stars we picked it up and we packed it in we left not a trace behind we know the law of the land and we continue to backpack and camp wherever we may. However we can thank God or great spirit for this great land we are here to stay we are here to play we are children with lots of yea.
