Beautiful, secluded, and quiet campground. BUT... we booked 3 nights but only stayed 2 because of the mosquitoes. I've never seen anything like it! Bug spray only works for a few minutes, and they swarm into trailers and tents. We didn't want to stay inside the whole time, so we left early. I guess it's just nature, but it wasn't pleasant during peak mosquito season in July. We wanted to explore the area but went to a higher elevation campground at Crater Lake instead. My advice: avoid this area in the warm summer months.
The campground and area are beautiful. We saw deer and kayaked with geese. There were 12 of us, including kids, and we all enjoyed ourselves. The downsides: 1. Only one vault toilet for the whole campground, and not enough toilet paper. 2. So many mosquitoes! We all got lots of bites. If you know what to expect and prepare, your experience will be better than ours.
The campground was hard to find. Google Maps is wrong; look for signs. The campsites are uneven in size – some very large, others small. Luckily, we booked a few, so we found one that worked. Very pretty and quiet, which was nice, but we might not go back because of the mosquitoes. I wore bug spray and still got 10 bites; my fiancé got about 40 from not reapplying.
It's a small forest service campground, about 3 miles down a gravel road. The road is full of holes and washboard – not horrible, but a slow drive. Nice campsites by the small end of the Deschutes River. I drove in today to check it out for our motorhome.
NO facilities, no potable water is especially bad. The boat ramp is bad too – can't get back up from the lake because the current is too shallow and swift. Not good access. Lots of mosquitoes. I'm not sure what the fee is for since there are no amenities. I also heard gear theft is common in the area.
