Best Campgrounds for Solo Campers

When it comes to solo camping, the adventure and freedom to explore nature on your own terms is a life-changing experience. However, choosing the right campground can make all the difference. As a solo camper, I know how important it is to find a place that provides safety, serenity, and plenty of opportunities to explore. From the peaceful forests of the Pacific Northwest to the rugged landscapes of the Rockies, here’s my guide to some of the best campgrounds for solo campers.

1. Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite has been one of my go-to spots for solo camping. The park's wilderness offers hundreds of miles of trails, perfect for those looking to escape into nature alone. Whether you're hiking to the top of Half Dome or just soaking in the view from Glacier Point, this park offers solitude like no other. The campgrounds here are equipped with basic amenities, but there’s something incredibly special about camping under the stars with the mountains towering overhead.

2. Glacier National Park, Montana

Another fantastic destination for solo campers is Glacier National Park. I recommend staying in the Many Glacier area, which gives you the opportunity to see stunning mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, and possibly even some wildlife from a safe distance. The serenity here is unparalleled, and while the area is known for its rugged terrain, the variety of trails available ensures there's something for all levels of hiking ability. The campgrounds are situated in beautiful spots where you'll feel deeply connected to nature.

3. Olympic National Park, Washington

If you enjoy coastal hikes, dense rainforests, and mountain vistas all in one place, Olympic National Park in Washington State is a must-see. The park offers several campgrounds that are ideal for solo camping, especially if you're looking to disconnect and recharge. My personal favorite is the Kalaloch Campground, located right by the beach. Waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore and the scent of pine trees in the air is a moment I will never forget. And, because it’s a less trafficked area, it offers a lot of solitude, perfect for those who prefer peace and quiet.

4. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

For those on the East Coast, Shenandoah National Park offers an amazing retreat. I spent a solo weekend here hiking the Appalachian Trail, and it was one of the most peaceful experiences. The park has several backcountry campsites that are perfect for those looking for solitude, as well as accessible campgrounds that make it easy to enjoy both nature and the amenities. With its incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and proximity to Washington, D.C., this is a great spot for a quick solo getaway.

5. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree is the place to go if you're looking for something unique. The desert landscape here is breathtakingly beautiful and quite different from other national parks. The campgrounds at Joshua Tree offer an intimate experience with nature, and since the park is a bit more remote, it’s easy to find spots where you can camp without the noise of crowds. This park is perfect for stargazing at night and enjoying the solitude that comes with being in a place where the silence of the desert is all you hear.

6. Pine Cliff Resort, Utah

If you're seeking something a bit more luxurious while still embracing the beauty of nature, Pine Cliff Resort in Utah is a wonderful option. This campground offers modern amenities along with stunning views of the cliffs and desert. It's perfect for solo campers who want to blend relaxation with adventure. With opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and a variety of other outdoor activities, this resort is a great place to unwind and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Whether you're an experienced solo camper or just getting started, the right campground can elevate your experience. From the misty forests of the Pacific Northwest to the majestic mountains of the Rockies, these campgrounds offer some of the best experiences you’ll ever have on your own. My advice? Bring a journal, stay present in the moment, and let nature guide you.
