When I first took my kids camping, I was a little apprehensive about how they'd handle being outdoors for a few days. Would they enjoy it? Would they feel safe and comfortable? Shenandoah offers over 200,000 acres of protected lands, with a variety of family-friendly camping options and hiking trails that range from easy to moderate in difficulty.
Our family took the opportunity to hike the Stony Man Trail, a relatively short 1.6-mile trek with a stunning view at the top. Along the way, we encountered wildlife such as deer and birds, which was thrilling for my kids. Another great feature of Shenandoah is Skyline Drive, a scenic route that stretches the length of the park, providing beautiful panoramic views—perfect for a leisurely drive while the kids relax in the car. Shenandoah’s campgrounds also offer picnic tables, grills, and nearby access to restrooms, making it a comfortable place for families to stay.
4. Olympic National Park, Washington
If your family loves diverse landscapes, Olympic National Park in Washington State is an excellent choice. My kids spent hours playing and finding sea creatures in the pools. One of our favorite activities was exploring the Cades Cove area, where we were able to spot wild turkeys, deer, and even black bears in the distance.
The park also offers several hiking trails that are suitable for kids, including the Laurel Falls Trail, which is an easy 2.6-mile loop to the park’s most popular waterfall. Camping here is a real treat, with multiple campgrounds available that provide easy access to the park’s attractions. Additionally, the park offers free programs like the Junior Ranger activities, which allow kids to learn about the local wildlife and earn a badge as they explore.
6. Zion National Park, Utah
Zion National Park, with its towering red rock cliffs and striking canyons, is another top destination for families looking to camp with kids. On our visit, we were able to explore the park’s famous Narrows, where the kids waded through the Virgin River, surrounded by towering canyon walls. It was an experience unlike any other, and the kids loved the adventure of wading through the cool water and splashing around.
Zion also offers family-friendly hikes like the Canyon Overlook Trail, which provides breathtaking views without requiring too much effort. The park’s campgrounds are equipped with basic amenities, and they are located close to the shuttle system, which makes it easy to get around and explore all the park’s wonders.
