Camping in the Columbia Plateau: Top Spots

When I first decided to go camping in the Columbia Plateau, I had no idea how much natural beauty and outdoor adventure awaited me. Located in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia Plateau offers a stunning array of landscapes, ranging from vast open deserts to lush river valleys. It's a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts like me, and I want to share with you some of the top camping spots in the Columbia Plateau that I’ve personally explored and found to be absolutely amazing.

1. Columbia Hills State Park: A Hidden Gem

One of the first places I visited was Columbia Hills State Park, and I have to say, it quickly became one of my favorites. Located just north of the Columbia River Gorge, this park offers an incredible combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and outdoor recreation. As a fan of history, I was fascinated by the petroglyphs at the Horsethief Lake State Park portion, which are over 2,000 years old!

1.1 Perfect for History Buffs and Nature Lovers

Not only does Columbia Hills State Park offer great camping spots, but it’s also a hub for hiking, fishing, and photography. I spent a lot of time hiking the many trails, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the mighty Columbia River. The landscape is perfect for photography, especially during sunset when the golden light hits the rock formations. The campsites are well-maintained and located near the river, making it easy to enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature at night.

1.2 Nearby Activities and Attractions

Aside from hiking, Columbia Hills offers opportunities for boating and fishing in nearby lakes. Whether you’re an avid angler or just want to enjoy a peaceful day by the water, there’s something for everyone here. The park is also close to The Dalles, a historic town that offers local museums, restaurants, and some great wine-tasting opportunities. I found it to be the perfect place to mix adventure with relaxation.

2. Palouse Falls State Park: Nature’s Stunning Waterfall

If you’re a fan of breathtaking waterfalls and rugged, scenic beauty, then Palouse Falls State Park is a must-visit. As soon as I laid eyes on Palouse Falls, I was in awe of its power and beauty. The 200-foot waterfall plunges into a deep basalt canyon, creating a stunning spectacle that left me mesmerized.

2.1 A Picture-Perfect Location

The park has a variety of camping options, from primitive sites to more developed areas with picnic tables and fire pits. I camped in one of the primitive sites, which allowed me to experience nature up close. The highlight of my stay was definitely the hike down to the base of the falls. The views were absolutely spectacular, and I was able to take some incredible photos of the falls and surrounding landscape. The sound of the water crashing below added to the sense of tranquility.

2.2 Hiking and Exploring the Area

Aside from the falls, Palouse Falls State Park offers a network of hiking trails that are perfect for exploring the surrounding landscape. I spent my day walking along the rim of the canyon, taking in the views and watching the diverse wildlife. There’s a small visitor center with helpful maps and information about the park’s history and geology. The experience left me feeling both relaxed and energized—exactly what I needed from a camping trip!

3. Wallowa Lake State Park: A Perfect Family Getaway

For families looking for an ideal spot to camp, I highly recommend Wallowa Lake State Park. Located in the Wallowa Mountains, this park is surrounded by dramatic peaks and a serene alpine lake. The scenery here is absolutely stunning, and it’s the perfect place for both relaxation and adventure.

3.1 Activities for All Ages

Wallowa Lake State Park offers a wide range of activities that are great for families. There’s a beautiful swimming beach on the lake, which is perfect for a refreshing dip during the hot summer months. I also enjoyed renting a kayak and exploring the crystal-clear waters of the lake. For those interested in hiking, there are numerous trails that cater to different skill levels. I did a family-friendly hike up to the Wallowa Lake Overlook, where I was rewarded with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

3.2 Peaceful Camping by the Lake

The campsites here are fantastic—spacious, well-maintained, and most importantly, close to the lake. I found the atmosphere to be peaceful, and the evenings were spent relaxing by the campfire with family and friends. If you’re looking for a place that combines outdoor adventure with family-friendly fun, Wallowa Lake State Park is an absolute gem.

4. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area: Adventure and Wildlife

If you're looking for a true wilderness experience, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is the place to go. Located in the northeast corner of Oregon, this area is known for its rugged terrain, deep canyons, and diverse wildlife. I found it to be a great spot for more experienced campers looking to immerse themselves in nature and take on some thrilling adventures.

4.1 Hiking and Exploring the Canyons

The highlight of my trip to Hells Canyon was the hike along the Snake River. The canyon walls are steep and dramatic, and the river itself offers some of the most rugged and remote areas in the Pacific Northwest. For those into challenging hikes, the Seven Devils Mountains provide stunning views and an epic outdoor experience. Hiking here is not for the faint of heart, but for those looking for an adrenaline rush, it’s definitely worth it.

4.2 Wildlife Watching and Scenic Views

During my stay, I was able to spot a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, bighorn sheep, and even an eagle soaring overhead. Hells Canyon is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, and the area offers a great chance to disconnect and enjoy the wild beauty of the region. If you're into photography or bird watching, the opportunities here are endless.

5. Finding the Best Camping Spots in the Columbia Plateau

The Columbia Plateau offers a variety of camping experiences for every type of camper. From relaxing lakeside spots to rugged mountain terrain, there’s something for everyone. I found that using websites like ReserveAmerica or checking out reviews on Yelp helped me locate the best campsites in the region. Whether you're looking for primitive camping or more developed sites with amenities, the Columbia Plateau has it all.

5.1 Essential Tips for Camping in the Columbia Plateau

One tip I’d give to anyone visiting the Columbia Plateau for the first time is to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. While the days can be warm, the evenings often get quite chilly, especially in higher elevations. Be sure to bring layers, a good sleeping bag, and plenty of water. Also, always check trail conditions and campsite availability in advance, as some areas can fill up quickly during peak camping seasons.
