What to Look for When Booking a Campsite Near the Ocean

Camping near the ocean is an unforgettable experience. The sound of waves crashing against the shore, the smell of salty sea air, and the beauty of the coastline all make for an ideal outdoor escape. But when it comes to booking a campsite near the ocean, there are several factors to consider. In this article, I'll share what I learned from booking oceanfront campsites, and offer tips on how to make the most of your experience. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or planning your first trip, understanding what to look for when booking a campsite can make all the difference in ensuring you have a comfortable and memorable experience.

1. Proximity to the Beach

The first thing that comes to mind when booking a campsite near the ocean is proximity to the beach. After all, one of the primary reasons people camp by the coast is to enjoy easy access to the beach. During my last camping trip, we chose a site that was just a short walk away from the beach. The convenience of having the ocean so close allowed us to go for early morning walks along the shore and enjoy sunset views right from our campsite.

When selecting a campsite, check the map and read the description to see how close the campsite is to the beach. Some campgrounds offer direct beach access, while others may require a bit more of a hike. Make sure to account for the walking distance if you have young children or older adults in your group. Having easy beach access is essential, but you should also think about the terrain—some beachside campsites are near steep cliffs or rocky paths that can be challenging for those with mobility issues.

2. Availability of Amenities

While some campers enjoy the simplicity of roughing it in nature, others prefer a campsite with more amenities. When camping near the ocean, it’s important to consider what amenities are available at your campsite. During my first ocean camping experience, I was grateful for a site with access to clean restroom facilities, showers, and even picnic tables. These amenities made our stay much more comfortable, especially after a long day on the beach.

Many campsites near the ocean provide basic amenities such as water hookups, restrooms, and fire pits, but you may also find sites with more luxurious features like electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, and fully-equipped kitchens. If you’re planning on cooking, check if the campsite has grills or fire pits, or if you'll need to bring your own. Keep in mind that more remote locations may not have all these comforts, so plan accordingly if you prefer a more rugged camping experience.

3. Safety and Weather Considerations

Weather near the ocean can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to choose a campsite that takes safety into account. Coastal areas can be prone to strong winds, sudden storms, or even high tides that could affect your camping experience. Before booking, I always check the weather forecast for the area to understand what kind of conditions to expect. On one trip, we camped during a rainy season, but fortunately, our campsite was well-protected by natural shelters like trees, which kept us dry and comfortable.

Additionally, check the campground's policies on weather safety. Some sites may have emergency evacuation plans or storm shelters in place, which is especially important if you are camping during hurricane season. If you're camping near the coast, consider factors like tide schedules and the possibility of flooding. Sites located in areas known for strong currents or flash flooding may not be the best option for families or inexperienced campers.

4. Accessibility and Terrain

When booking a campsite near the ocean, accessibility is a key factor. During a recent camping trip, I opted for a site that was easily accessible via paved roads, as I knew we would be carrying heavy gear and needed a smooth path. However, some coastal campsites require navigating dirt or rocky roads, which may be more challenging, especially if you're bringing along a trailer or RV. If you have a camper or plan to bring a lot of gear, be sure to confirm that the roads to the campsite are accessible.

Also, think about the terrain of the site itself. Some oceanfront campsites are set on sandy soil, which can be difficult to pitch tents on, while others are nestled in grassy areas with more stable ground. Make sure you select a site that suits your needs and can handle your tent or RV. If you’re looking for more comfort, try to choose a spot that is level and has firm ground to ensure a good night’s sleep.

5. Wildlife and Insects

Being near the ocean means you’ll likely encounter more wildlife, including seagulls, crabs, and maybe even marine life like dolphins or seals. While these creatures can be a beautiful part of your experience, it’s important to consider their presence when booking your campsite. On one of my trips, we camped in a location near a seal colony, and while it was a sight to behold, it also meant we had to deal with the smells and sounds of the animals at night. Choose your campsite with wildlife in mind, especially if you are camping with children.

In addition to wildlife, insects can be a significant factor when camping near the ocean. Some coastal campsites are known for being heavy with mosquitoes, especially at dusk. To minimize any inconvenience, check with the campsite to see what types of insect repellent they recommend, or bring your own. Many sites near the beach also have specific rules about food storage to avoid attracting animals and pests to your campsite.

6. Cost and Reservation Policies

Last but not least, cost is an important consideration when booking a campsite near the ocean. Oceanfront sites can be more expensive than inland options, especially during peak tourist season. I’ve personally experienced sticker shock when booking campsites in popular beach destinations, but the experience was worth it. Be sure to check the prices in advance and compare different campsites to find the one that fits your budget. Some campsites near the ocean also offer discounts for extended stays or group bookings, so it’s worth asking about any special offers.

Reservation policies are also an essential factor. Many coastal campsites can get fully booked, especially during the summer or holiday weekends. If you’re planning on camping during these busy periods, I recommend reserving your spot as early as possible. Some campsites allow you to reserve your spot online, while others may require phone reservations. Be sure to check the cancellation policies as well, just in case your plans change.

Now that you know what to look for when booking a campsite near the ocean, it's time to start planning your perfect camping trip.
